Was just on a Newcastle forum and another kid who played was a youngster who just signed from Oldham. They apparently picked a guy up from Port Vale at the same time (U14/U15 I think) and the poster said the club had bought the families each a house in the area so they could move up. Is that typically a thing? I know we used to have lodgings for youth players decades ago.

A great hope when in the academy , on England Youth programme too, and then went nowhere really after believing grass would be greener.

Another harsh lesson for academy boys to learn - there are so many like this who we believe will make first team but just disappear
It's not a "harsh lesson" at all

The alternative was staying here and making 0 professional appearances.

I have nothing but respect for young players who take a risk and make the jump to find first team football.

Far too many young players stick with one club hoping for a chance and they just watch their career wither on the vine.

Players still live in digs now from when they start scholarship at 16 until 18. They can then chose to stay with host family after or move out. Club have a relationship with estate agent in Bush Hill Park area near Enfield and lots have lived or now live in that area.

Clubs promising families a house, jobs at the club etc is a method often used by Chelsea and Manchester City to recruit players.

Although unrelated Chelsea, City and Arsenal would do this with the women footballers as well Offering them administrative work at the club to try to entice them to sign.

I remember when newly signed first teamers used to lodge with one of my school teachers. Awful woman, it’s a wonder any of them stayed.

We bought Gazzas parents a big flash house which persuaded him to sign for us. And we got done for it. Kicked out of the fa cup and 12 pts deduction. Reduced to 1m fine after Sugar got to work.
How times change.
That isn't why we got the 12 point deduction and kicked out of the FA Cup.

"The main charge centred on Tottenham's purchase of three players, Mitchell Thomas, Chris Fairclough and Paul Allen. Spurs allegedly made a 'loan' which it was never the intention the players should repay to Thomas and Fairclough and an ex-gratia payment to Allen, prior to their fees being fixed by the tribunals but without the tribunals' knowledge. A player's income is taken into account when this body assesses the fee and in these cases it might otherwise have fixed a higher figure. The selling club could therefore claim that the fees were not settled fairly."
