Are we talking about same Tom Carroll that has yet to show his worth on any level and who has 1 U19 cap and 1 U21 cap under his belt?

and what worth, pray tell, has Caulker shown? he had more erratic games than good ones last season, where is all this ability that we're so stupid to be giving away? because I can't see it myself.

He has cut it at every level he has played including PL, been regular at England youth sides and won his first cap at twenty. I see rather big difference there, now go and fetch someone willing to give £9m for Carrol and Levy, Baldini and AVB will argue who gets to drive him to destination.

what exactly is your point then? that we shouldn't bother buying anyone and just stick with what we've got, even if they're not that good?

Well my initial point was throwing away points in august, points that are worth as much as points won in april.

That post you quoted was just response to your comment about yellow pages.

It's always sad to see a player leave, especially when he's come through the ranks and is a decent squad player. The problem is that Caulker would probably be a squad player rather than a first team player for a number of years as he isn't as good as a lot of people may think he is. He may only be 21 but has been playing professional football at a decent level for several years and if I'm being honest doesn't look like progressing much further, he may learn a few things playing regularly but possibly not enough to take him to a higher level. Hopefully I'm wrong and he goes on to become a regular international.

cut it? he was POOR last season, and was also poor in the Euro U21s. featured? absolutely. cut it? not yet he hasn't, not by a long chalk.

are you saying the sale of Caulker will prove the difference between points won and points lost in August? if we're failing to beat Palace and Norwich because there's no Caulker, then I'd suggest maybe our problems are worse than any of us would've thought.

You are underestimating our opponents and having Dawson as sole central defender or at best paired with someone who has just arrived for new league and new team with little to no time for adjustment reeks a list of defensive errors.

the sale of this young player displeases me,.... I do not see the upside here, but it is not the end of the world...

My question is, if his name were Caulkinho,... then would he still be at Spurs?... :mask:

I'm not underestimating anyone, but Caulker should not be the x-factor between us and either of those two teams. besides, the indications are that Vertonghen should be fine.

The more I think about this, the more confident that I am that there is a bluebird coming our way. No way we can get rid of all of this cover without a plan in place. I'm guessing it just never leaked through the ITK's.

The only other explanation is that we are supremely confident that both Kaboul and Vertonghen are/will be fit.

With Vertonghen currently injured, Kaboul having an ongoing issue hanging over him and Gallas gone, I'm not sure I see the sense in this sale.
Leaves us with Dawson as our only CD.
Looking deeper into the squad for reinforcements, all relatively unproven anyway, but Khumolo has gone to Doncaster, Hall to Swindon and Ekong gone to FC Groningen, we have a severe lack of options.
Even if Vlad Chiricheș does sign, I still think we are looking a bit light at the back.
Strange call Caulker going, he hasn't quite kicked on as expected after Swansea, but still young, an England international, and academy trained. Strange sale.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but apparently he has the same agent as Bale...

being an England international really doesn't mean anything. there are lots of average/poor players with England caps. if you're young, English, and play for one of the bigger clubs, you're almost certain to be capped at some point. that in itself is not good enough of a reason to not sell him.

I'm pretty bummed about this. I will hold on to the hope that the buyback is true and we might find out later. I always thought highly of Caulker and thought his shortcomings were a result of him still looking like he was finding his confidence. I have no doubt he will turn out to be a solid (if not really good) CB in the future.

I wish him all the luck and hope one day he dons the Lilywhite again.

Doesn't Caulker have the same agent as Bale? Please don't let it be the case that we are letting the Bale situation cloud our judgement here. Hopefully we have a replacement coming in soon - one of the incomings mentioned by JJ earlier ?

For those of you deriding the opinions of those criticising this decision with the 'I think AVB knows what he's doing' comment - do you really think managers are infallible? And if so, why bother having an opinion on the decisions that are taken?

Personally, I think AVB has been good for us but that this is a stupid decision. It's not the first in the transfer market since he took over (however such decisions are taken and whoever by).
