Long has it been since I have felt the urge to contribute with a fully fledged article with a Spurs bias, maybe my disappointment over the Jol situation has finally subsided and I am ready to start my Spurs life again this time under the guidance of Harry Redknapp. What persuaded me to start this article were a few negative posts and I thought I would attempt to add an air of positivity.
What has ignited my new Spurs confidence was the game against Spartak Moscow, yes the one we almost messed up. This was the Spurs I know and before a few sarcastic comments come out I meant the way we were playing football, not the appalling errors. There are certain players at Spurs which could be the next generation, before we had Carrick, King, Berbatov and Keane. Now we have Modric, O’Hara (yes Jamie O’Hara) Lennon and Huddlestone. I feel if our first team was fully fit (if only) we are striker and a left back away from greatness.
One moment sparked my attention was against Man U it was late in the game Spurs were under a little pressure, not an onslaught and the Spurs of old would just be booting it out in panic and sitting ten men behind the ball but I saw something that impressed me and makes me realise we have the future captain of Tottenham Hotspur in our ranks. Ronaldo had the ball in a threatening position on the left wing, Jamie O’Hara came across won the ball (an achievement in itself) and then calmly played a one two with Zokora and played the ball out of danger with confident short passes and a bit of skill. In my opinion he has the grit and engine of a midfield dog fighter and the footballing ability of a creative midfielder. If he gets his head screwed on right and calms his game, he has the potential to be our future captain and possibly even captain eventually. Our Steven Gerrard.
Ok we got beat by Newcastle by a late goal but these things happen. We can take the odd defeat as long as we play the Spurs way, I know some people would sell their own mother for some success but I would be happy with good quality football and a quality hard working football team. I firmly believe that with the majority of players we have at Spurs can take us forward and eventually to the top four as long as we are patient. We must also be careful not to sign a multitude of players and close the revolving doors at White Heart Lane, a couple of signings in key positions will be needed but lets have a settled first eleven and become a team.
We had a settled team with Jol and I firmly believe that if we had added experienced or premiership experienced players instead of Boateng, Taarabt and Kaboul, we would be in a similar league position as Villa are now. Hopefully Daniel Levy will learn from his mistakes and make sure Spurs don’t let anyone leave with the exception of the players who have not been involved much with Spurs (Boateng, Rocha etc.)
I believe we have a lot to be hopeful for this year, and I would personally be happy if we only added to our squad in January. We lost key players in summer and hopefully we will realise that we cannot let good squad players go and we cannot have a team full of Modrics - we need a balance.
Hopefully Spurs will progress next year enough to enjoy some cup success. We have a new stadium on the way, a financially stable club and a team that can beat anyone on their day. We should also be celebrating our British spine of players to go with our british manager. We should be celebrating the fact that we are out of the relegation zone playing good football as we go. I firmly believe the only way is up.
Come on you Spurs!
