The problem with Roots captaincy is when the going gets tough and England aren't on top in games he just looks completely tactically lost.. Or he makes ridiculous decisions like yesterday when England were on top he then bowls himself for 5 overs and we lose the control of the game.

Also performances against the top 3 test nations under his leadership are woeful ike this test.

Looking forward to the day Root gives up the captaincy (they'll never sack him in a million)

If that day were today, who would you pick?

No way i'd give it to Stokes and risk losing his form/ability, not to mention doing it 'his way' against the Windies wasn't exactly a resounding endorsement of his ability to do the job.

Do we pick the best English county captain and do a Brearley? Candidates seem a bit thin on the ground to me
Who is you're worst Batsman? Pick him as he won't have to get much worse!

In the current team id give it to Burns he did well as Surrey captain

Captain? Half of the ideas they come up with before the day starts and then Captain by numbers - the days of Brearley's, Lloyds and Borders are long gone I reckon.

Is absolutely futile picking Buttler. Foakes must be livid.

Also how can we have a captain that doesn’t know how to use truly fast bowlers or leg spinners? It’s not rocket science. Give Archer/Wood short 4 over bursts looking to bowl fast and work batsman over. For a leg spinner, get men in catching positions and accept you will give away some runs, but back them.
The only thing I'll back Root on is the Archer conundrum, and it is one lets be honest. He's gone from bowling 96mph to 86mph and basically said it's his choice/limit. That actually must be quite frustrating for Root.

Wood would be more reliable if he wasn't made of glass.

It’s not a conundrum though. It’s an illustration of his need to adapt the demands placed on him by Root and his clueless captaincy.

If Root tells him he wants him to bowl nasty and aggressive short spells do you think Archer will be bowling at 86 mph? However if Root just says to him have a bowl Jofra, he must half think that could be a 12 over spell so reacts accordingly (Root has previous of doing this).

I’ve said it before re Archer. In the same way that Buttler is a one day player I also think Archer is. He naturally wants to bowl a different pace virtually every ball. Great for one day cricket. Waste of time for Test cricket

Don’t get me wrong he’s still ok to good as a bowler in test cricket. Just as Buttler is as a no7

But for me both are world class one day players. imo both are wasting Englands time in Test cricket when there are better options atm

Harsh in my view, I think Archer was absolutely outstanding against the Aussies last year, then complete rubbish against New Zealand, then varying forms of either ok or not since then. He's like Pietersen, world class when he wants to be, but completely uninterested when he doesn't.

I wonder if Michael Holding had a point on day 1 ablut Archer not 100% trusting he’s recovered from his elbow injury, therefore not being mentally prepared to give it everything. not sure. has to be some reason why his oace has dropped since that Ashes series.

This Shah kid for Pakistan looks a real talent. test match bowling at 90mph + at 17 years old - great to watch.

It is at times like this that the Boycott type batsmen would be great but because of modern day requirements 20/20 50 over and soon to be
the 100 it is not what's required hanging about at the crease for long periods .
Good as these Pakistani bowlers are you can bet your bottom dollar that even they will wilt if you can bat yourself well into a second new ball

Thought Buttler & Pope stuck at it brilliantly for the first hour this morning. Obviously needed a bit of luck but Pakistans bowling was exceptional

He now must go on to get 70/80 and hopefully a possible match winning Ton+

Done the very hard work with 38 from 106 balls. Now hopefully he can relax a bit and go on

He certainly relaxed. Silly **** forgot to put his bat & pad together. Pretty loose, airy fairy shot

Still a good 38. Should be good for another 12/18 months....

There is absolutely no justification to continually pick Buttler after this test. All it would do is prove that Root has his boy club and Buttler is a fully subscribed member of it.

The argument that Foakes has done nothing at county level is futile, too. All of these players are on a blank slate in that regard and, quite frankly, Buttler has done fuck all in any extended format of the game for a very, very long time.

Unfortunately for Foakes, if the impossible happens and Buttler is dropped, it’ll be his mate from Yorkshire who takes his place.
