I think it's optimistic to expect that but it's not like we are absolutely desperate for immediate surgery is it? I think people need to remember that.

We don't have the gaping holes in the squad that we used to have going into the start of seasons.

Well true. We dont need much in XI but we can't be stagnant as well. Start of preseason, its always good for squad to see new players coming in & challenging. Just motivates them. 2 weeks to go. Lets see what happens

Of course you'd rather have them in early but it's not a desperate situation. The main thing this summer is that we actually get them in, whenever that may be.

It's quite a relief from the situations we used to leave ourselves in a few years ago. The two signings of Adebayor spring to mind as well as the Stambouli debacle and the Livermore Kranjcar CM2 combo.

If we get Barkley, it will be a cover for likes of Dembele & Eriksen. He will certainly be an upgrade on likes of Sissoko. Atleast he will get some competition going for places.
But not convinced Barkley will be easy to get. His wage demands as I see from papers are high in range of 150k. Lot of convincing to be done & then there is Everton as well.
I don't think we will get him. But if we do, he will be a great addition & I believe, Poch will turn him into a monster of a player

Papers and you believing he really wants 150k pw. Do not believe everything in the papers is a rule.

Somewhere inside Barkley there's a very decent player waiting to emerge. Perhaps with the right guidance from Poch he can kick on. However, the success of such a deal is somewhat contingent on the optics related to price. We break our transfer record on him and he proves to be no better than a decent squad player, it looks wasteful. But we manage to bring him in for a something less earth shattering, and he develops his game enough to be an England regular, it looks smart.

I would love to know first where Poch sees him playing. Backup to Eriksen? Center midfield? I honestly couldn't tell you his best position as i haven't watched enough of him to know. But when he's played for England, I've always felt he looks out of place further up the pitch. Feels like he'd do better in a CM2 role.

Very curious to see how this one plays out.

To be honest this year is one year where it is not that important to get the signings in on time unless we sell first team players, infact even with Walker we would still be ok as we have Trippier, while a new signing can settle.

I highly doubt we will immediately improve our first 11 with any signing, even Lemar, as it will take him time to adapt to Poch's training and the PL.

What is far more important is to make sure all the lads get a proper preseason and the likes of Rose, Winks and Lamela get fit.

At this point I am actually more excited to see what a full preseason can do for the likes of GKN, Janssen and Onomah.

And last minute signings only bother me if they are bang average, or appear to be panic buys.

What has pissed me off in the past is signings late in the window who then go straight in the first 11.

Poch wanted Sissoko too. Just saying.

I'll support them when they are in the shirt, but until then, I won't want someone just because Poch apparentally does if there are things I see that give me no reason to want the player.

There are very few things in Barkley that make him want him as our player, and none of them combined make me want him for any of the talked about prices.
Not sure of that seen conflicting reports he wanted him

Everton have to sell, no way round that, all reports state Barkley will not sign a new deal, so Everton risk losing him on a free.
I'm sure we are his preferred destination, as he seems driven to break into the England starting lineup, and playing week in week out with Walker?, Trippier, Rose, Dier, Alli and Kane can only help him in that.
As for the fee? Can't see it being anywhere near the fees quoted.
I think he'll be ideal as combined Eriksen & Alli competition/cover. However, I think the key factor is Lamela, can we justify having him as well as Barkley. I don't think we can. Lamela out and Barkley in for roughly zero net spend, seems about right to me. Lamela is a £25-30m player, Barkley likewise.

If Barkley left on a free, would Everton still be entitled to a tribunal? He turns 24 in December of this year.

If they are entitled to a tribunal - then we should figure that could be £10-15M for a player of his experience. And then tack on a fee to get him this season - so reasonably £25Mish

Second time in a year I'll be desperate for a transfer to fall through. At a time when we clearly don't have much money to spend but at the same time don't really need to do much work on the squad spunking what £20m+ on Barkley would be madness.

If we've suddenly found a wad of cash and its him and also that dynamic pacey attacking midfielder too then fine, but really think we'll only sign one midfielder over £20m. I'll be very disappointed if it's Barkley. Poch is amazing but let's not pretend there hasn't been numerous players he's been unable to improve.

Barkley has not progressed at all under various managers the last 4 years, in fact he's got worse. Scores a few shots from long range and the hype train starts only for it to break down a few weeks later. Maybe I'll be proven wrong but he is so meh and has been for a while now.

Ross Barkley created more chances (84) than any other U23 player in Europe's top five leagues in 2016/17.
