I was thinking more the signing of Bale.

Bale was 17 when we signed him though. Not many expected him (or any 17 yo's for that mather) to tear it up instantly. Lamela on the other hand is 23 now and actually looks worse now than when he arrived.

As I said, you may not realise how good a transfer window is for a couple of years.

Been told (3rd hand) that there was a vey small snippet on FTL earlier today saying that Illa was the player that poch wanted.
Depending on who it was, they might have taken that from Trix, who said yesterday in the answer to his cryptic that he is Poch's preference.

I don't believe it!!!

People moan because we don't go for top players to improve our squad then, when we do, they just pooh-pooh it as being impossible to do because a bigger club will come in for him.

Why not wait and see before decrying everything?

Calm down dear - it's just an opinion. People are hardly 'decrying everything', wandering around the thread with sandwich boards announcing we're all doomed - a few of us just feel that the Illarramendi idea is very similar to a few from the last several windows - a player who could do better than us who we have little chance of signing, but who sends SC into raptures as people lose all sense of realism.

I don't agree with this concept that we have a list of players that we try for, if one fails we move to the next. I'm sure we make moves for several players together. Transfers are very complicated and it's not a simple case of asking "is this player available and if so how much for". I'm sure we put the necessary groundwork into signing several players in each position we're looking to fill. As we get to the finer details and close in on a certain player we can always end interest in others.

I'm sure Illaramendi would be one of our favourible choices but I am sure we'll have other options brewing as well. It's not like we would accidently sign 3 defensive midfielders together. A deal could get to the final stages before we pull out if something better comes off first.

This.

To think that we do our deals linearly is naive. It is feasible that deals are put in place early for the "less fancied" (for want of a better term) players. These are then ready to spring if our "more fancied" acquisitions don't come off. Because they then seem to happen very quickly, it is viewed as a panic buy.

From COYS (LedleyKing76):

Hello all, I moved from London to the midland 6 years ago and I don't live far from St George's training complex.

Yesterday I bumped into a guy who was here for a week doing some training..
I spoke to him and he gave me this

On Potch

Levy loves Potch for three reasons

Potch wants to bring kids through the ranks "as we have seen" he loves the coaching part of the game. Ali and Prichard are doing lots of training with the first team and Potch wants them to burst onto the scene late September early October when they are ready. We will see more of them in EL for now.

Potch doesn't want to spend big money, a bit like Wenger at the scum. He doesn't hound levy for money and wants to make a profit every year. But he doesn't want to be at a selling club and is happy how levy try's to keep hold of big players.

Levy also likes the tactics and training regime that Potch had brought into the club.

Transfer rumours

he is sure we will buy at least one more striker but we need Ade gone first, Ade is keen on West Ham but since the Olympic stadium bid Levy doesn't want to loan him to them. Villa wanted to buy him but we would have had to pay a big percentage of his wages. Levy and Potch both want Ade gone.

All interest in Lennon has dried up, Spurs are asking what other clubs say is to much money.

The same with Townsend Southampton wanted him but Spurs were asking far to much money.

That's all I got, he doesn't work for Spurs but has friends that do.

Thanks for the read but it is really hard to take anyone who call our Manager "Potch" seriously.

I keep getting this image of Him wearing a red nose hanging around kids in hospitals, like Potch Adams

There just seem to be so many of these posters on all Spurs boards.
They can't see any positives in anything the club does. Always picking a negative side to any post.
Seems like they get their pleasure out of being miserable or defeatist.
They point out the possible pitfalls before they even arise, let alone waiting to see if they do!

In fairness, if someone would have said by September all of our deadwood would be gone, literally all of it, and we'd bring in Trippier, Wimmer, Alli, Alderweireld, N'jie, Berahino and Illarramendi plus brought Pritchard into the first team, and never lost Lloris & Kane, regardless of our results on the pitch before then, we'd all be saying it was potentially our best window ever.

We are potentially looking very, very good for the future imo.
If we get Berahino and Illa then yes I agree but if we get neither then it' s shambles. I really do believe that's how critical these players are. I won't make out that Illa is a glaringly obvious player to sign (whereas Berahino probably is) just because we got our first snippet recently, but at this stage we really don't have anyone else of his ability we can bring in. I basically think it's going to be Illarramendi for the CM spot or no-one/no-one worthy. We must improve the CM position and I think Illarramendi is the our last chance to do really do that, I'd be amazed if anyone else of his ability emerges at this stage that we have a chance of signing.

Basically I see them as our best remaining options and maybe the only two left that are good enough and most suitable and realistic at this stage. If we get both then that will be amazing and I agree with the best window thing, neither and I think we're in trouble

This just sound like something our PR department would come up with. Can't buy a striker before Ade leaves? We have sold a bunch of senior players this window and probably cut a TON from our wage bill

And why would Poch look to make a profit every window? It's his ass that will get fired if he fail :/

edit: im happy u shared it though, don't get me wrong. I just have a hard time believing a few of those points.

JJ said that Ade not leaving wouldn't affect our transfer plans, Trix agreed, I believe.

Thanks for bringing that over here.

Bringing kids through as we have seen? Errrr, must have Poch confused with Sherwood.

Levy likes his tactic(s)? Ehhh, i like that Poch actually has a tactic(even if it is only 1) but I sure as hell dont enjoy it. Is more enjoyable than run abat abit, however.

Levy wanting too much for Townsend and Lennon? Jives with wjat we have seen from Levy in the past. Classic Levy.

If Ade decides to dig his heels in and ends up staying, is Levy going to demand that Poch integrates him with the squad?

The answer is no.

A new striker is essential before the window closes, regardless of what happens with Ade.

Like this, especially as it's in blue so I can skim read through all the "onions", moaning and (bad!) jokes in this thread. Hoping we could adopt this as formality for "ITK" posts?

No way does Ade staying effect our business otherwise we would have bent over backwards to do the villa deal.

The one thing i really, really, really dont understand is Levy not selling Adebayor to West Ham. Surely its like the Trojan horse sending him somewhere.

Or we could just put the good ones in the ro, as we do now.

One of the inevitable and stupid things we are now facing is if/when Illarramendi goes elsewhere, people will start losing their shit about Levy with zero knowledge of whether it was ever a realistic deal or not.
