DL stated 5 years ago the transfer market was not just about finance, but about skill

(AT 5 mins in.)

He's partly correct in that, but since then we've taken that too far.

What if applied Skill AND Invested?

I'm not talking about doing a Chelsea or City, but as @DaSpurs stated, even if we just did a Hull or Stoke.

Invested a little again, and with our pull, judgement, and network - we might actually get somewhere.

Should put that in the is Levy holding us back thread as it answers a few questions (inlcuding the role of dof). Good find very interesting.

It would not surprise at all if @TrickyVilla (trix ?) is spot on. You have a budget and valuation, if a deal can be done you do it, but if the financials are miles wide or there are ownership problems and you can't, you maybe sign your next choice or you say fuck it, the other options further down the list won't improve us so why waste money. We have time to see what we can work with the squad and kids we have and can always re-assess and redress in the next two windows when we'll have a much better idea where we are and what's needed.

I was kind of with your little rant until this little gem. What exactly are you arguing here? That actually spending money works?

Because if I was saying that I probably wouldn't use West Ham as an example of how to spend money. Because that would be stupid.
they aren't scarred to just cuz they have shit scouts doesn't mean that spending is bad show me one team that finished ahead of us for top 4 thats saves more money then we do. taking risks is how to get ahead

Why was he dragged then ? And why have we signed another DM and doing all we could to bring in MS, he's 19 and nowhere near ready. A loan would of been ideal but he is not going to improve us one bit at this stage

He was subbed because he wasn't as good in the second half. The boy's 19. Here's an idea, how about we are patient, because he clearly has ability, a brain and a good strong mentality.

We must look forward. All down to Pochettino now. He's a good coach and he's got enough to work with to have a progressive first season.

Today has sucked but a smaller squad will help us. Helps with morale and ensures each player gets more game time, and should therefore be able to step in more ably.

Should be easier for Poch to coach his philosophy to the lads. Should also be able to have a more consistent selection of subs. Hopefully we get more effective competition from the likes of Lennon/Townsend and Paulinho for the AM3 for example.

Hopefully Stambouli and Fazio will turn out great, which would be a big boost.

We need to follow the Liverpool approach and kick on in the January window now (as they did with Sturrdige and Coutinho). We should be able to act more effectively with less of a bloated squad.

Hopefully this is the groundwork for better things to come, we can but hope. COYS.

we won't get top for with this squad AvB could;t do it tim couldn't do it poch won't be able to do it the only upgrade from last it fazio
yer wrong the best one is stomboulli watched him a number of times and was always a standout performer and like sandro loves a tackle and wont get bullied he really will be a bargain as for Fazio I know very little but if poch wanted him its good enough for me the only downside is that the arse have got one over us

It's the ghost of Van Der Vaart that stalks the halls of this place sometimes. In rational, sane people's heads there's always that little hope that something wonderful will be pulled out of the hat, when that was a one off. People get too cranky as a result.

The chadli one !!!? Are you joking ? That was a lump up to adebayor that both he and the centre halfs missed !!! Chadli did well to anticipate... Or have I completely missed this from where I was sat !??

Very early in the game when Bentaleb swivelled and played a long through ball. Their defender beat Chadli to it by less than half a step and his clearance bounced off Chadli's leg for a goal kick. Had Chadli reached it in time and clipped it into the centre, both ade and Lamela were there to finish it off.

We didn't sell a first teamer and bought 3 first teamers. We got 69pts last season in a shambles of season with two managers who had major flaws. Just thought I'd add this in middle of negativity.

So what's a reasonable baseline of expectation for Pochettino, if what you say is true? 72 points? 75 points? If two flawed managers could achieve 69 points, surely Poch will do better than that, especially with "3 first teamers" added to the squad.

The PL net spend table is damning for Levy and the board, only Southampton made a higher net profit.

Most clubs spent £20 million plus net while we recouped £6.5 million.

As always with Spurs there are two sides to the coin

The window should have supported Poch a little more in that it was his first, unless he rejected everybody bar MS and JR.

Supporters pay top money to see Spurs play and on that basis the club carries a greater expectation than most of the others. We saw tonight an example of a player choosing our rivals simply because they are in the CL and that will give him a better platform

The other side is that we understand that Poch is happy and we do have good players. With better cohesion and work ethic they will improve but there is a need for some hard work and some leaders (one is not enough). Some of last years signings really have to come good and not leave it to Lamela

It will likely be a bumpy ride this season and it should not really be so

Why is damning for Levy? We are spending the money on the infrastruture of our club. We are looking at the long term, not buying a £20m striker that is no better than what we have.

It would be damning if the club was making massive profits and we were slipping down the league but we're not,

Well, according to Trix ITK, he didn't reject other players, but he still wanted both MS and JR regardless, so I would understand Daniel's reluctance to sign a +15m players if Pochettino would come again on January asking for those two as if they were Pogba and C Ronaldo. I've been on Poch's camp from the first minute, but I don't like this stubbornness. I'm blaming him and not Levy for this window. There's a limit to backing he manager. MS is not worth 27m and J Rod is not worth 20m. We could've gotten upgrades for less, but Pochettino insisted on those

I have no baseline expectations right now. Lets see how the season unfolds, how many injuries we have, how we are playing on the pitch, are we getting better - I'd like to keep the top-4 within a shout, but if we lose Eriksen and Lamela for a stretch, I will lower my expectations.

Its never as simple as how many points do we have - there are so many factors that go into that beyond just the manager, that its not worth having that conversation.

I can tell you right now, based on a limited set of data, I like how Pochettino is managing the squad a lot more than I liked the way Sherwood or AVB managed the squad last season. But they just got their noses bloodied, lets see how they react.

I do have a sneaky feeling that Stambouli and Fazio are going to add some needed toughness to the squad.

Next big decision will be the appointment of the captain - should be interesting.

Speculating to accumulate? How about £450m of speculation, is that enough for you?

That's not speculating.

That's a guaranteed return on investment, but i guess you already knew that, but was just winding me up.

Is that enough for you?
