I really don't understand why there is such a clamour to get Carroll back. It's not as if he's set the Championship alight this season.
Given a choice between Holtby and Carroll at this stage of their respective careers, I would pick Holtby every time.

I don't see the problem with Holtby going. We have a number of players who can play that attacking midfielder, number 10 role and it's not as if Tim's playing such a formation at present.

Don't rate him myself.

This is the issue, though. Holtby is NOT an attacking midfielder, which is exacly why he stated himself that he prefers the deeper role. I think it's fair to say that he has proven he can be a very good 'string puller'? He's certainly played some wonderful passes through to Defoe, in the Europa League. Oddly, we don't really have many (any?) other players who can see, and play, a quick intelligent pass from deep.

He isnt a player that will set anything alight at any level. He is tidy, smart and industrious with possession. He is a player that has the ability to succeed at any level.

I would hazard a guess that Carrick would not set the championship alight either however given the right personnel to play with and situation to thrive he would become a world class asset. Carroll has potential to be the same.

Not every player needs to be flamboyant to improve a team.

Man Utd have wonb titles with the right mix of players, not 11 superstars

That's the Fifa generation for you I'm afraid. 90 pace and 5 star skill or GTFO.

I loved Carrick, I loved Modders and now I love Eriksen. The non flashy reliable types are exactly what we need.

As you said he's very tidy and keeps the ball ticking over. The same with Bentaleb. Obviously TS wants players in midfield that are comfortable with possession and also able to pass through teams. It's not always about power, however a good blend of both types of players is the key to any midfield.

Nah, 87 pace is fine.

It would make sense to loan Holtby rather than sell him at this stage. As hopefully when the new manager comes in the summer he isn't as infatuated with 442, so has a use for his skill set.

Loved Carrick and Modric..Eriksen has some more to do to prove his a replacement for them but it is looking good. I have tried to watch Carroll as much as I can for QPR, I really rate the b
Nah, 87 pace is fine.

Or even 80+ pace as long as the strength is 80+ too........

I'll hopefully be able to start to donate again soon. I have a job interview today, if I get that, it's all good.

Oh and I liked it better when Spurs were shit. Our fans didn't act like spoilt children back then

Funny you say that. I've reverted myself back to "Hope" instead of "Expectation". Its working out quite well.

My irritation rating on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being mildly ruffled and 10 being foam-at-the-mouth raving mad:

Selling Holtby: 2
Selling Capoue: 7
Selling or even loaning Lamela: 11

I suspect DL has the same scale due to cost involved.

Holtby was a small investment so no biggie.
Capoue was £8m so won't want to waste that.
No chance he would allow a 21 year old club record signing leave on a short term managers say so.

Well Capoue can and I'm led to believe that Bentaleb has it in his locker. But if you and Lewis are classing him as a DM/CM type then I'm very glad he's off. No where near mobile enough by far and his passing is certainly not of the class you mention IMO.

If we're having immobile DM/CM's then I'd take Hudd back.

I think a loan for Holtby is absolutely perfect at this stage. Get him some proper game time and we can reassess in the summer be it with Sherwood or someone else.

Holtby might think he is that, which basically means playing as part of the Cm2, but on the evidence I have seen he is pretty incapable at playing this role. Firstly lets start with his passing, he often tries to play an overambitious pass rather than keep recycling possession and waiting for the right moment to play something more progressive. Then there is his positional nous, which is quite frankly really really poor. He charges around and gets dragged out of position. That West Brom game his 'audition' to play as one of the centre mids was one of the worst attempts I have seen in all truth just because of basic lack of understanding and appreciation that you need to have some discipline and not charge about everywhere.

Yeah, god forbid expecting a player to be adaptable...

Why do you keep mentioning the 442 infatuation, do you honestly believe that is what we are playing?
