Since when does the narrative need to be agreed to by all and sundry?

There's a section of our fan base who refuse to believe that Poch wants to win a domestic trophy.

the thing is if he didn't want to win one, how the hell have we reached 1 final and 3 semi's, surely losing in the 3rd round would make sense, as it would then save energy and injuries hmmmmm

So the target is to become Arsenal minus the multiple cup wins

but Arsenal took 9 years after being in their new stadium to win a trophy. we haven't played a single game yet

only another 9 years to go, lets hope we then get drawn at home every fixture and play relegation teams in the final, bar their last 1 which if the linesman helped them more than the Polish lineman did for England West Ham's world cup win

The question for me is not necessarily do we the fans consider trophies important, but do the players?

Both our current top players that we want to keep and players that we are looking to recruit?

Yes money as always is key, but players do want medals to look back on at the end of their career.

I'm sure the players would love to win a trophy but ultimately I think the English players in the team have all grown up in a time where the FA Cup is no longer as prestigious as it was when a lot of us were younger, and the foreign players have probably never seen it as that special. In the vast majority of countries the domestic cup is not very prestigious at all so I assume the foreign lads just see the FA Cup like they see their own domestic cup i.e. a secondary competition, and christ knows what they think about the league cup.

Ultimately I think if it's a choice between winning the League Cup and winning nothing, then obviously everyone would pick winning the cup, but in reality we don't have the squad to compete on 4 fronts so it becomes a choice between going for the cups or competing in the CL or finishing top 4 etc. and I reckon most of the players would rather play in the CL every season than win the League Cup and finish 6th.

If you believe that our progression hasn’t just stalled but has vanished never to return, then I can understand your disenchantment.

Is it based on a belief that we need to spend hundreds of millions in the transfer market to compete?

If so, I think the one thing Pochettino has proven beyond doubt is that he’s a good manager of a club that doesn’t spend hundreds of millions, and it’s hard to think of a better one. Isn’t it?

I am disenchanted because I believe our current strategy is not working. We won't win anything significant without spending a lot more money, more than Levy is willing to put in.

I feel a lot of the fantastic momentum we had the last few seasons has gone. I feel the world class players which enabled us to compete, many are now past their peak or leaving. (Verts, Toby, Eriksen).

We only really have Kane, Alli and Son to hang our hat on, and hope that the likes of Sanchez and Winks are able to step up into world class players, which is a huge ask. I look at the lack of investment in the squad, and the massive work that needs to be done on it, and I think we have left ourselves too much to do. We should have made signings last summer who could bed in this season ready to take over from Dembele and Eriksen when they left. I just think things are a bit of a mess and are likely to get worse, not better. We need to sign like 3 - 4 top tier players just to stand still let alone improve. We can't even sign one.

I mean seriously, people talk about the stadium, it's pie in the sky stuff. By the time that stadium makes a difference for us, Kane will be retired. Think about that.

and what will you name the liverpool way?

you do know if Liverpool draw twice and City win City go above them, and if that happens and they lose the title again, surely it will be the bigger legends way, as everytime they have lead the league at Xmas they have blown it

Yes, but this is a thread about Pochettino.

As I said, given the fact that we don’t spend hundreds of millions on transfers, who would be a better manager of this club, with the owners we have?

Why do people keep bringing stuff up like this? Can we not be happy with top 4 but still be peeved when we pass up opportunities to win trophies?

we haven't passed up on them. if we wanted a free pass we wouldn't even try and get past the 3rd round. last week we lost to Chelsea on penalties with 3 penalty takers unavailable.

last season we lost a semi final because of another stupid pass by Trippier, the season before we lost it to 2 players diving over a player to win a free kick and a penalty, but the only game I put any blame on Poch for, for starting Son as LWB, when Davies was on the bench

Perhaps 'pass up' is too strong, although Poch's words suggest that. But we do have a problem taking these opportunities, that's for sure.

This is a potential theory or explanation regarding cups. Poch is possibly the best in the league at motivating and training players. However when we play in games that really matter such as other top 4 teams or semi finals both teams are extremely motivated which dulls our competitive advantage a little. This also explains why over the Christmas period often considered hard to keep motivated over lots of games we had one of the best points total. Don’t think this explains everything but maybe contributes to why we can’t get over the last hurdle often.

Thing is, it's just the tip of a smallish iceberg this morning/afternoon, the discontent (like that quote) after he offered up his honest opinion seems to have sent some into a place I can't fathom.

Probably not even a Spurs fan, just someone trying to get a laugh.

Like there's anyone called Emil living in Stroud :cautious:

As long as this isn't where we are genuinely at then I'm good personally, but there is a murmur out there, I just hope it stays that way.

Is knowing Poch has helped create a great team that belongs in the champions league while at the same time being knocked out of every cup competition we’ve been in every year meant to make us all feel good about the latest two additions to it this week?
We’re succeeding (top 4) and failing (trophies) every single year in my opinion, I’m tired of seeing the best Spurs sides I’ve seen in my lifetime fail every year. *Generic caveat of it could be worse*

FF sake he has tried to win, if he didn't we wouldn't of got to a final and 3 semi's. if the players fail in those matches it's their fault to.

did Poch tell Trippier to give Dembele the ball with Pogba up his arse? did he tell Vorm to not try and us his feet.

did he tell Son to lay in the way of Moses or Lloris to take the wrong step for the 1st.

we are losing to the teams at the top in Semi's we lost yesterday because we were struggling to field a fit and healthy starting XI, we also lost because Trippier, KWP & GKN didn't try to put the ball in when they had the chance, or score when they had the chance

You talk as if signing players is easy , yeah we could sign a player or two but are they the players Pochettino wants? I think we’ve been down that road before and it’s a bitch trying to get rid of dead wood. The biggest clubs in world football are now finding it difficult to sign the players they want. Our model is very simple we have to wait for the right players to become available while introducing development player I really can’t understand what some of our fans expect. Take Fulham they spent a shit load £ 100 M on the other scale Liverpool too they’re out of both cups and it’s not a given they’ll win the league. We Tottenham supporters have to sensible and not jump on the media brain washing narratives.

The positive. We have a world class stadium training facilities brilliant manager and chairman ( with good intentions imo) good development players coming through, competing in the CL and currently 3rd in the league, not selling our best players to rivals...its not bad for those of us of a certain age

TBH i initially wrote this season off, due to numerous factors; No pre-season for our first team, injuries (due to the aforementioned pre-season) late stadium move and no investment.
We have had performances where you can clearly see we have had zero energy or intensity, something that Spurs at their best under Poch was famed for. Or we've started fast in games but had to hang on by the end, But we have had to adapt.
And it is only due to the magic of Poch and the resilliance he has instilled in the players/squad that we are in the position we are in.
yes i am fucked off at the last week, but considering what we have had to put up with this season and More injuries than anyone by far
I'd say we are still in a pretty good place. Hopefully without the extra cup games now we can get our better players on the pitch and hold onto our top four place, then with a proper pre-season next year and dare i say some in comings :shy: who knows what we are capable of.
