Alen Halilovic came on in the 85th minute (his second senior game) and it was enough for him to score his first goal. He's now the youngest player ever to score in the 1.HNL (Croatian League). The previous record holder was his teammate Mateo Kovacic.

Didn't look like there was too much wrong with his left foot there.

Halilovic centre of attention as Man United, City and Real Madrid fight it out

By Sportsmail Reporter

Manchester United are battling Manchester City and Real Madrid for Croatia starlet Alen Halilovic.

The midfielder, 16, is contracted to Dinamo Zagreb but has been allowed to train with Real as the Croatian side weigh up a sale.

Halilovic is valued at £12million but United and City are considering offers of around £6m.

The Under 17 international is already being compared to Luka Modric and Real hope that Modric’s presence at the Bernabeu can sway a deal their way.

Meanwhile, City and Arsenal want PSV Eindhoven defender Riechedly Bazoer, 16.

Bogus reporting by the way. Dinamo has not allowed him to train with Real Madrid, nor are they "weighing up a sale."

He has previously been at Madrid, but that was behind Dinamo's back. And things got "sorted" after that.

But that he is being chased/courted by Europe's biggest clubs? Definitely.

With such a name, he should play for us and every other time we can chant his name instead of haleluja.

Halilovic made his Champions League debut yesterday vs. PSG. But only came on in injury time which upset the Dinamo brass, who were hoping/expecting him to get more playing time.

He managed to get only two touches, but you can instantly see he has that "something."

Manchester City set to win race to sign 'Balkan Messi' Alen Halilovic

The Premier League champions are closing in on a deal that would see the 16-year-old wonderkid move to the Etihad Stadium from Dinamo Zagreb in a deal that could rise to £9m

Manchester City are set to win the race to sign Alen Halilovic, the Dinamo Zagreb sensation who has been coined the ‘Balkan Lionel Messi’.

Roberto Mancini’s side have beaten off fierce competition from clubs around Europe, most notably Manchester United and Real Madrid, both of whom have long been credited with holding an interest in the 16-year-old wonderkid.

City officials have been in Zagreb since Monday trying to thrash out terms to bring the starlet to the Etihad and an agreement is now in place for a deal that could eventually be worth around £9 million.

Halilovic is the latest impressive graduate from Dinamo Zagreb’s academy, which has also produced stars such as Luka Modric, Niko Kranjcar, Vedran Corluka and Mateo Kovacic.

The attacking midfielder has already been touted as the finest Balkan player of his generation despite the limited amount of first-team experience has picked up so far.

He made his senior debut off the substitutes’ bench in a 3-1 win over bitter rivals Hajduk Split in September, an appearance that made him the youngest ever debutant in the Croatian top flight at 16 years and 102 days.

Just 10 days later Halilovic broke another record - this time becoming the league's youngest ever goalscorer after netting with a superb Messi-esque chip in a 4-1 rout of Slaven Belupo, while last month he became the youngest player to play for Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League when he appeared against Paris Saint-Germain.

Once the transfer is announced, he would become City’s seventh signing of the season following the arrivals of Jack Rodwell, Javi Garcia, Maicon, Scott Sinclair, Matija Nastasic and Richard Wright.

While Mancini's men were drawing 1-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night, Halilovic was getting another small taste of European action, coming off the bench for the closing stages of Dinamo Zagreb's defeat to Porto.

Halilovic is a Croatia youth international, currently playing at under-17 level for his country.

Would be a terrible move for him. ANY move is a terrible one right now and for the next 3 years at least. He needs to play football in that timeframe. Would be much better served staying where he is until he is 20 and getting 100+ games under his belt.

It's bad enough they've ruined the transfer market with unrealistic prices for fair-to-middling players, your Barry's for instance, and raised the bar of wages for stars to crazy levels making any responsible club look 'cheapskate'. But this whole notion that plasticity might be turned into 'sustainability' through 'developing' youth players makes me even more sick as it will also render our (previous) approach of buy em young, sell em on, pointless as the players with the most potential will just be bought for sums that would constitute transfer records for 95% of top division European clubs. When these kids have agents, that kind of money at that kind of age will always be utterly seductive, and their advice will reflect that. City are also linked heavily to Isco, so how many attacking midfielders do they need, and how many careers are going to be ruined there...Luckily for them, the damage they are causing football is flying under the radar of the shambolic narcissist circus that is Chelsea..

Stimac saying he will give Halilovic (still 16-years-old) a call-up for their next qualifier (vs. Scotland). He's not quite ready or deserving, but they would like to get him tied down a.s.a.p. The reason is that the player is also coveted by Bosnia and Herzegovina.

At any rate, he was the standout player in yesterday's European Championship U17 match vs. Italy.

Here's a UEFA.com interview with him after the match.

http://www.uefa.com/under17/news/newsid=1949109.html

An interesting answer to who he thinks his playing style resembles:

UEFA.com: Many people are comparing you with Luka Modrić and even Lionel Messi. What do you make of those comparisons?

Halilović: I think I am not anywhere near Messi or Modrić. Leo Messi is something special, he is like from another planet, and Modrić is more of a defensive midfielder and I am more focussed on attack, playing offensively and scoring goals. If I have to compare myself with somebody that would be [David] Silva from Manchester City. He is one of my favourite players, I watch him a lot. But he is not my main idol, the No. 1 for me is Messi.

A good effort from yesterday's match:

He needs to work on some segments, particularly off-the-ball situations and work rate, but his ability on the ball is painfully obvious. He can be frustrating and make you wonder if it's all gone to his head, then the next passage of play he'll remind you of why he is so sought after and viewed as one of the best prospects to come out of Croatia in a long time.

He has all the talent. It's really up to him if he's going to maximize it.

Unfortunately, that's the way with all the young stars. At 16 he's got plenty of time yet, but I think it'd be important for him to keep plying his trade at home for another few years. If he gets into the team properly next season and has a great year, but then gets poached by a big club due to his potential then it could ruin him, IMO. Not enough kids stay long enough with their home clubs where they can learn their trade fully.
