Are typical defensive capabilities the key attributes we need in our DM? It seems to me our biggest problem is that in our system we play out from the back, in all circumstances and no matter who we are playing. We could be 1-0 up in the 95th minute against Man City and we'd still not only play out from the back but we'd do it at a high tempo. I never feel as if we aren't aggressive enough in terms of ball winning in CM or protecting the back 4. I think our problem is that the ball comes from the GK or CB to the DM so quickly and he has to distribute it really quickly and be press resistant. I'm not sure typical swash buckling DM attributes are the issue for us. We need someone who can take the ball under immense pressure and find an outball so we can transition quickly. I can't be the only one who finds watching us play stressful as hell because we invite so much pressure from constantly playing out. An energetic DM with impressive ball winning stats shouldn't be our priority imo. I think we need a really good technical player, who is very comfortable taking the ball under pressure and distributing it quickly and with purpose, that happens to be a decent ball winner.

Agree with some of what you say here but I do think we don’t track runners that well in the spaces we leave and we need someone who can do what you’re saying but is also intelligent with their positioning defensively and good at covering ground quickly to plug gaps.

We need to scout someone like Rodri

The guy is just immense at city. Always available for a pass and great at short passes and long passes with either foot

Sounds like Lo Celso to me.

Can’t say he’s been on my radar at all, but this video is fairly impressive and the Twitter thread describes him as being a 6’8’ version of Onana that’s still a year younger than him. Could be an ideal cheaper option potentially

Have you seen him at all @Ghost Hardware ?

Was going to mention him in my response to @King of the Lane question. By far one of the most exciting young under the radar prospects in the dm/cm position. He plays in a double pivot and I’m not sure he’d be ready to be our back up BUT he looks very talented. There has been a lot of debate as to his best role but in our system I think he could certainly play DM. He probably needs another season as a starter but i would still put him near the top of my list of realistic targets as my personal feel is we should look for a young prospect rather then a more established starter.

Really interesting about Skelly Alvero, thanks for sharing guys! He looks a very intriguing talent and one to watch for sure.

Looks like Bremen have a very low buy option from Lyon for the summer but perhaps we could get in there and do a deal if we’re interested.

Could be a bit of a physical freak like VdV which would work amazingly well for our system.

We have to scout the right players... but we also have to prepare ourself to pay big money for the right men. Hot prospects alone can only get you so far...

@Ghost Hardware what do you think of Youssouf Fofana at Monaco?

He has played both b2b and DM over the past few years and is a good player as arunspurs mentioned yesterday.

Do you think he could play 6 for us?

Haha, I have been trying to find time to write a full response to @King of the Lane question re my top picks for the 6 since he asked me yesterday but with Easter I just haven’t had the time. I wanted to profile each individually, maybe I’ll do it at a later point.

I laugh tho because he, along with Alvero, were two I was going to mention as liking a lot but both you and @Now it's Spursonal beat me to it. The others I was going to talk about being André Trindade and Alan Valera.

There is actually quite a bit of similarity between Alvero and Fofana in that both are versatile and skilled enough to play as B2B’s or DM’s and both often play in a double pivot. Obv Yussef is far further along in his development but still. In short yes I think he could, certainly in our system. I think the fluency of our system allows for more dynamic players in that position.

Tbh I think all three of Valera, André (both of whom I also really like) and Yussef would all slot into our starting 11. Alvero as I mentioned above would need time but would certainly be in there as a prospect option. Ideally I think he should probably have another season starting but with Ange I think he could probably help him adapt swiftly to the point of playing a part next season.

Obviously I think all that being said if I could pick anyone and money wasn’t a issue I’d pick ether João Neves or Archie Grey but both would be extremely difficult deals to do and likely very pricy. Neves especially. Essentially they are probably beyond our reach.

I would add that others we have been linked to such as Ederson and Zubimendi also solid options but the ones I mentioned above would be my personal preference.

What about Enzo Barrenechea @Ghost Hardware ?
Part of the Juve group at Frosonone along with Soulé and Jorge. I like him but he needs to work on his positioning and decision making. I think he has potential for sure and can be very good but he’s still too rough for me. He can also be a little rash and can follow the ball at times, he lacks a bit maturity for the position which is understandable given his age and experience. He does have some good qualities tho but he needs another season as a starter on lone imo.
