It would be crazy to say that Walker is defensively solid, but he's so quick and is such a threat offensively that in many ways, one of the biggest defensive plus' to his game is the fear he instills in an opposing wide player. A left back is going to have serious seconds thoughts about getting too sucked into an attack or committing himself to attacks too often, for the knowledge that if he's caught out of position, the space he's left is going to be completely gobbled up on him.
I mean, who would you rather face, not as a player, but as a manager. Walker, who you know can most likely beat anyone on his side of the field for pace, or say, Dier, who yes is solid defensively, much more so than Kyle, but he's not a player who your LB is going to be overly concerned about exploiting the space he leaves when he takes a wander up field.
I wouldn't want Walker on the field necessarily when protecting a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes to go, but he easily is the best option for who you'd want starting out, especially against a team with strong and quick wide players.
I think the threat of him offensively is what makes him a good defender.
