My god Merson on soccer Saturday just then was an embarrassment.

Said hiring Mourinho shows Levy is settling on top 4 and an FA cup instead of challenging for the league. Doesn’t understand why Poch got sacked as he’d have had spurs back in top 4 end of season.

said if they brought in Allegri you could say ok they have a plan, but Mourinho is too short term.

Lescott said Mourinho would have won the CL final if he was in charge and Merson said no, Poch has more chance of winning those games, Mourinho would never have got passed Ajax (Mourinho has faced Ajax 7 times and won every game).

Merson then saidyes Mourinho is a serial winner but in the same sentence said Poch has more chance of winning trophies ?????‍♂️

Then said Kane will want to leave now as he will go from having 12 chances a game under Poch to just two chances a game under Jose

No matter the result, I just want to see evidence of us going back to being a coached unit. Nevertheless, JM has only been here for 3 days, it's gonna take him a few weeks to find his best team and implement some tweaks.

Hope it's a 433... Our front 3 have so much potential to play that way. Will suit Pamela more as well enormously.

Funny seeing the comments about Dembele because I always thought Winks was groomed as the long term successor to him.
At least from a positional point of view anyway. He's been mostly playing in Diers role though so looking forward to see him not as deep.
I think we'll see a lot of Winks and Ndombele rotation in that role though.

I do love the pacey and tricky wide men in the 433. If kane has the ball at his feet i hope they have been instructed to MOVE rather than stop like we have in the past.

Good luck team!

This lineup should be better defensively but still effective on the break. A bit like how we used to play. It’s a simple lineup that makes sense.

If not, Mourinho is going to find out pretty quickly that defensively we’ve been terrible this season and Dier is very rusty.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see us play on the counter like others have said but we will have to be a lot better defensively today and going forward, than we have been.

Agree but its a bit unfair as its also the same time Dier and Wanyama left the team leaving Sissoko paired with Winks which, as I've been saying for an age, left us without a recognised dm. Neither of them are good enough in that role.
If Sissoko was left to receive the ball and bomb forward with it, which is what he is good at, while someone else sits deep, I dont think we'd be in the mess we are now.
Very valid points and hard to disagree with

I agree that sissoko wasn’t solely to blame and actually think he epitomised poch’s philosophy that the team was bigger than an individual - but cm is so important and he just doesn’t have the ability. The problem then came that poch wanted to show loyalty to a player that really wasn’t good enough in a critical position.
Maybe José will continue with him - but I think him leaving him out immediately gives a lot away. Defined players in defined roles

Joe Cole pointing out a new warm up routine. May be miniscule to many, but perhaps a sign that Jose had indeed been re-evaluating and analysing from afar? Still think some have played down his time out of the game these past 11 months. He wasn't happy at United and seems to me there is a spring in his step again. We may very well be getting the best Mourinho. Hopefully today we get off to a winning start and carry on. COYS.

Whether the individuals are liked or not it’s very clear to me that you can see players are being picked for specific roles - which is something we have lacked.
As much as I admire Sissoko I am pleased to see him dropped - this will be unpopular but I just don’t think he’s good enough. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that (forgetting the results) our play also went backwards when Sissoko became a starter in centre mid

Agree about Sissoko. Doesn’t have the discipline to protect the back 4.

Would probably make a great wingback.

As the first match for us, think we shouldn't read so much into the players Mourinho's fixating on. I for one am believing he's not making wholesale changes to the squad. With plenty of games ahead, majority of the squad will be utilised. Players like Sess will definitely be playing in the near future.
