?? that’s when our parrot died ? legend says that’s where the phase sick as a parrot come from.I beg to differ. The worst instance of them screwing us (and a couple of other teams) over was after the first world war. Spurs finished 20th in the old First Division in 1915, and the league was suspended because of the war. Post-war, the division was expanded to 22 teams. Chelsea, who finished 19th, kept their place, and Spurs were supposed to keep theirs too...but Arsenal, who finished 5th in Division 2 in 1915 somehow (with brown envelopes stuffed with cash is probably how) persuaded the league to vote on who was promoted/retained their places.
Here's how the second division table looked in 1915:
1) Derby
2) Preston
3) Barnsley
4) Wolves
5) Arsenal
Derby, Preston and Arsenal were voted into the top flight, Spurs were voted into the second division.
And to make it worse, because Arsenal have never been relegated since, they are the only team in the top flight to never actually earn their place there.
