I thought I was the only one that saw this, it hasn’t really been mentioned and played its part. Echos of Clattenburg losing control in that 2 2 game.
Yeah it was awful, one of them on maddison was a yellow card offence. They fouled us 5 times in the opening 3 minutes. They clearly set out to rough us up and kick us off the park and rattle and it worked sadly but the ref has to take some responsibility and stop this happening.

Poch used to have us doing a lot of "tactical fouls", so not a huge surprise. Did Chelsea mostly keep it at the free kick level or should the ref have been stronger with some of them and issued a yellow - not sure when watching it live.

Reece James should have been sent off.
It was a deliberate elbow

Why is everyone saying it was one of the greatest games they’ve ever watched? It was full of drama from VAR but as a showpiece it was terrible and not exactly great football on show.
Hard for us to be objective and enjoy the game when down to 9 and suffering injuries to key players. But it was very exciting, the atmosphere was pumping and we tried something that normally teams wouldn’t try. I can understand why neutrals would have loved it.

Sounding like Liverpool now, we should have kept our heads we would still be top. Can’t work on what other teams do no complaints on our sendings off.

Agree. We can’t want Curtis Jones sent off and then say Romero got the ball first.

Romero got upended a couple of minutes earlier (which looked like a foul but nothing given) and I think the red mist descended from there and he was looking to get a shot at somebody. Anyone who has played has been there.

  • Yeah he looks really good.
Spurs had a really good summer.
  • This high line with two sent off is pure madness
  • This high line is beyond insane.
  • Tottenham's keeper would be perfect for us like.
  • I am entertained
  • Fair play to Spurs so far
  • I just love how Spurs insist on playing on the halfway line
  • Ange is crazy! Do respect his massive balls.
  • I'd love know what Ange's plan was
  • Is this really want we want in this sport?
  • Yes
  • Spurs stadium really is something.
  • Spurs with the high press, makes sense
  • This is so so funny, can't wait for all the post match fume
  • Spurs line is so high it's now in Chelsea's half ffs
  • i have never heard Ange speak. But I still have a feeling he takes it just a bit more gracefully than Arteta. Actually, I think trump takes defeat better
  • Spurs had 5 men in the Chelsea box there
  • This is genuinely the best game I've ever seen
  • Spurs fans have been class here
  • its a very unSpurs like character-wise display
Take this effort and character into future games.
We went on a thirteen game winning steak after competing with Derby whilst down to 8men back in the day.
  • it's been incredible
  • Could see Postecoglou turning this into a positive for Tottenham
  • Got to be high on lines to play a line that high
  • Easily the best game ever in the PL era.
  • What in the universal credit did I just watch?
  • That was better than The Wire
  • Ange was really classy there coming onto the pitch, shaking hands with the ref and linesman and leaving it at that, going over to the Chelsea players etc. Classy bloke
  • You can tell already Ange will be infinitely more dignified than Arteta.
  • This interview is as mental as the game was.
Jackson saying spurs are the best fans and club in England
  • Ok, I officially love Postecoglou. The anti-Arteta
  • Postecoglou has got them in a good place mentally. They'll be there or thereabouts
  • Honestly one of the greatest games of football I've ever watched,
  • Really hard not to like Ange. Seems like a really good bloke.
  • don't like him. His surname's too hard to spell.
  • Sky interview with Ange seems like a real dig at Arteta. Love it
  • "We go down to five men mate, we'll have a crack."
    That's great.
  • Brilliant, tbf
  • Not deliberately trying to jump on the Ange bandwagon but I did love his soundbites on reffing from last night
  • Ange makes me not detest Spurs. Conte really had to be the star of the show and an asshole like Arteta
Wow that's a good read, I feel rotten now for cheering on Dortmund last night.
Just shows the impression we're making on people.

This is why I was saying we will become the ‘neutrals’ favourite PL club under Ange.

Agree mate, drama filled sure but one of the greatest game ever watched absolutely no chance.

Compare this to say Liverpool 4-3 the back and forth each team keep taking the lead, Rush, Barnes, Ginola, Ferdinand, Collymoreeee closing innnnn last min goal, Keegan head and shoulders slumped onto the advertising hoardings etc that was a proper ding dong incredible football match, our game vs Chelsea was just us dominating them then getting a silly sending off then a few lengthy VAR reviews and then us defending as best we could with 9 but ultimately losing 1-4, hardly the greatest game ever watched but did like the comments from the Geordies in general.

💯 although one of the greatest games ever seems a bit of an exaggeration 🤷‍♂️

For what it's worth I don't think Curtis Jones should have been sent off, I don't think VAR should have been involved in that decision or Romero's. The referees made their decisions they should have been respected, if video evidence suggests it ought to have been red then there's a case for retrospective action, VAR could even make that decision at the time and report it straight after the game.
I even wonder if referees are now backing out of giving a red knowing VAR will do it for them if necessary.
This is all part of the diminution of the referee's authority that Postecoglu is talking about.

He already had his shot and got away with it (the kick on Thiago(?)).

Far too many var interruptions and not enough in time action for it to be considered the best match. I think they said the ball was in play less than any other match over the last 2 years. I can see why neutral fans would enjoy the drama and the chaos though.

I think the instance with Romero was all in that same period though. The kick out and then gets back to defend and is still hot headed at that point. We needed a break in play for him to cool down a bit. It's one of those where if they had a little scuffle the ref probably stops play and books them both. Then the rest of the play doesn't play out and he might just calm down a bit and avoid a red.

I need to watch it back, but I don't know where his foot could go after getting the ball? I don't even think there were claims for a penalty by Chelsea players in the seconds between it and Caicedo scoring. Maybe the kick out played its part, but I do think he was unlucky with that incident on its own.

His studs were on the way to the shin from the moment he started to move, the ball being en route was mostly incidental. Sadly it was a red all day.

Have to agree, look at his face, there was definite intent there, along with his foot being higher that it should've been with studs up. As I said before in the match thread, I think Oliver letting a lot of challenges go (a la Clattenburg at the battle of the bridge), led to challenges getting worse and worse until someone was going to end up doing this or what Udogie did.

It's the force more than anything. When you strike the ball with your foot in the direction of a player it's endangering them. You have to be in control of your body. Obviously your foot will follow through but he should put his foot through the ball angled away from the opposition player. He goes instep instead and towards the opponent. It's one of those where as a player you leave a bit on your opponent doing what he did. There's no need to kick into the player when you clear the ball there. The fact the ball goes a different direction to where the boot goes shows its the wrong technique. He should go with laces so he boot follows the direction of the ball. He knows what he's doing because a lot of players do it. With var it's being checked now but that's a good thing really. Irregardless of whether it was picked up on in real time.
