It just shows how sky need to change it up.

Having current players/managers/coaches in the studio (or even recently retired) would make the analysis much more relevant. There might as well be one of us sat there as there is Souness. He hasn't played or managed in the game in decades. It is irrelevant what he thinks.

Same with Jamie Redknapp, he hasn't played in at least 15 years. Carra, Neville and Richards (he can do no wrong after he obliterated Sol Campbell) should be at the top of Sky's team sheet.

There must be hundreds of ex player and ex managers out there who'd offer so much more than Souness in particular. He just seems to sit in the studio spouting drivvle without having done a jot of homework. If he was a race horse he'd have been shot years ago. Keane isn't much better with his endless macho nonsense. At least Neville and Carragher seem to have done their research before they open their gobs. I used to find Slaven Bilic quite interesting when he was on. At least he used to notice what was actually going on on the pitch.

You have only got to listen to Souness and Keane in particular to know they seem unable to put to one side their bias towards their ex team
It does not have to be their teams match they are watching you only have to listen to Souness his dislike of certain teams becomes obvious when hearing his views or rather what he has to say ditto Keane add Merson to that list Tribalism at its best .
The new breed seem to be able to comment with even handedness even some of the older ones like Ian Wright are very fair in giving opinions . I have a problem with Hoddle that he has taken the idea of neutrality too far and sometimes his comments are more biased against spurs . So infuriating .

I agree. I love Hoddle but his commentary gone really meh recently. I used to think that about Ray Wilkins, god rest his soul etc. He was relentlessly positive and would never say anything negative about anyone. Feel bad saying this, but it was so, so boring. I think he was too close to the players, managers etc and that's the route Hoddle has gone.

Really? I loved Uncle Ray. No, he wasn’t incendiary in his comments, but he always came across as thoughtful and insightful. He would criticize players in more general terms by talking about the football tactics and situational moments, by illustrating what went wrong or right. Without being overly critical in personal terms. He was very much a scholar of the game, which made his comments often very compelling. You would have assumed that he was a great coach, with the way he’d analyze games. But he didn’t do a great amount of coaching. Just a few things, here and there.

Ray and Hansen are two of my all time favorites. And both similar in terms of how they would look at and comment about the game.

Got a lot of time for Rio Ferdinand. Just seems a genuine guy who loves his football.

Achieved pretty much everything in his playing days, but gone through so much more in his personal life.

Not that he had to win me over, but his celebration (with Hoddle) when Moura fired in that winner against Ajax was just pure IMPARTIAL football joy.

ah man, now you’ve made me re-watch that 10mins it so clip of the whole night and studio/commentary reactions again.. I actually missed it live as I was out in Woodstock working, so Ive never seen the whole match cos soon as I heard we won, I couldn’t not watch the highlights and play backs.

Im not crying, it’s just a little bit of dust in my eye.

I did the other day, what got me was Jenas where I can’t remember the commentators name, said that he had a very emotional Co-commentator next to him, meaning Jenas, and then when Jenas spoke, you could just tell how choked up he was, proper tear-jerking moment for me.

This is not about us but it is about a pundit and on sky sports Merson has been going on a long time about not wanting xtra time as he wants to get home to have a sleep . This bloke gives commentators a bad name he is acting as if he dont want to be there . I have news for him we dont want him there either. I then turn over to BT and the co commentator says to Rio Ferdinand " I bet you are worried about getting home with this extra time he replies " I am happy to stay all night to watch this brilliant football" or words to that effect but the difference in attitude to the game is a galaxy apart .

It’s called having a sense of humour pal, as much as I hate him for being a gooner, mersons a mans man with a good sense of humour, Rio Ferdinand is a complete tosser, he used to drink in Bromley, out his nut in all the pubs walking round thinking he was a gangster. Now he’s putting on this big act of being the worlds nicest guy, he’s fake, funnily enough around the times when he accidentally forgot to do his drugs test and turned his phone off yo hide from testers

I think it’s because they know that if they are less partisan then they can get more jobs. Looking flexible and being able to offer balanced opinions on teams is more likely to get you commentating or pundit jobs in more studios and companies.

You call Merson a mans man I call him thick and quite honestly not very intelligent his football knowledge is no better than my grandsons .
As for his not being able to pronounce names I will assume you find that endearing where I find it unprofessional if he dont know how to pronounce a name I think as a proffessional commentator it is not good enough if he can't read it get someone to explain to him .
As I dont know either of these people whatever Ferdinand is like off camera I cannot comment on but on camera he is professional
Knowledgeable and often gives real insight to what's going on on the pitch .That plank Merson is so reactive in his comments its incredible
There is no insight because that would take brains and knowledge . As for a person being likeable off screen for myself I have no interest in such comments because it is subjective . What one person sees as rude someone else sees as humour and so on .
You can be a mans man and still be a Pratt because you will hear other people comment about Merson and have the opposite view of him that you have .

I can understand one of them for the sake of ratings and such (even thought I'd personally want at least Souness gone) but to have both Souness and Keane is really overkill, as neither of them give any footballing insight or tactical assessment and what they want to do the most seems to be to slate a player or team.

I've never really been bothered but is getting annoying now. I'm finding that I have to hope they cover our game on MNF , MOTD or the SSN show on Monday morning where the match assessment is much better as they say fuck all in the studio. I know those shows have more time to analyse but even given the time, I really couldn't see Keane or Souness dissecting a game well at all.

Can't believe that they got rid of Letisier and kept Merson. I think I could've accepted Charlie Nicholas staying but Merson brings nothing to any show he's on.

Chris Coleman was excellent on co-commentary. When he was introduced I thought 'Where the fuck have they dredged up an ex Palace player from to skew the commentary?' but as it turned out he was 100% objective and fair.
You probably already know this but he spent almost 10 years at Fulham so fair enough to have him on. You're right, he was excellent and they should have him on more often.
