dont know but on setanta sports before the match they said ramos had him out on the pitch training for over a half an hour dont know how true this is

I can verify this to the extent that he was certainly being put through his paces at the side of the pitch in front of the northern end of the West Stand before the match. I arrived at my seat at around five to two (not being an alcoholic) and he was already on the pitch with the fitness trainer and the physio. He continued for some time after I arrived, but I suspect it wasn't a fitness test as such, because I seem to recall he was still on the pitch when the teams were announced for the first time.

Gilberto didn't play because Ramos would have felt that the team had already been altered enough as it is and that it would have been too much change as they have never played together as one unit before, so it comes down to team gelling. It made sense.

I wonder if we'll get to see Gilberto playing for Brazil against the Republic on Wednesday night.

Does anybody know if he's in their squad?

He was waiting for his international clearance certificate or something, as with Alves for Boro

Tim Vickery's opinion on Gilberto:

I heard a Brazilian pundit say that he will most likely play in midfield at Tottenham, although, to be honest, I would see him more at left-back.
Tottenham have missed a left foot to open up the field for a while and I see it as his most natural position.
It's nice to have such versatility, though. He is currently Brazil's first-choice left-back and, although he is by no means the best player to have filled that position, he is a steady figure who I see as a sound buy, in the short term at least.

He wouldn't have had any opportunity to train with the squad, so why would you throw him straight into the side without so much as practising how Ramos wants his back 4 to operate together.

I would imagine it is because Brazil are now preparing for the Olympics, thats why there are a lot of young players are in the squad like Pato and Lucas. Unfortunately Pato got injured yesterday so is unlikely to play now.

On a separate note, does anyone know how long he's signed for? I don't remember seeing it on the official site when he joined and remember thinking they must've left that part out for a reason.

I somehow think they'll be ok without him. Although we drew 0-0 with them the last time we played them.

Wouldn't have minded seeing Gilberto play though.

I would. I wouldn't have been in the slightest bit pleased if he'd got injured in some Mickey Mouse kick-about.

It can and does happen. Torres was carried off with a suspected hamstring injury tonight.
