We can now play a proper 4-2-3-1, with VDV behind the main striker and any combination of Lennon, GDS, Niko, Luka, Bale, buzzing around them.

I don't think VDV can play CM in a 4-4-2 in England. However, Redknapp may try him as the left-sided midfielder in a 4-4-2: keeping the shape when we're defending, and with a license to come inside when we're attacking.

If we pull it off, this is an excellent signing, and makes us much stronger.
Still lacking a strikerwho can play the lone role? someone with the movement/strength/heading ability and general link play for the role.

only way i see it, bale as left back, modric back on the left floating about, probably somewhat in reaction to the lack of creativity at home to teams that sit back.

so imagine if this does happen then it will just be for home games perhaps

with then a 4:5:1 away but then i dont see us having 2 creative types in central mid paired with huddlestone, or perhaps we do....oh who knows, seems like a panic purchase to me, but a potential decent one, better than rasiak or campbell anway

He's hardly a panic buy mate. I take it you haven't seen much of this kid play?

Yes. But VDV is more of a proven goalscorer than any of our current attacking midfielders.

Do you remember that season when a young Glenn Hoddle had hardworking but limited strikers named Chris Jones and Gerry Armstrong ahead of him? He used them as a wall to play 1-2s and scored around 20 goals from midfield.

Crouch may play the lone role on occasion, holding up the ball and enabling the attacking midfielders to play off him.

Also, VDV has the vision and technique to spot runs by strikers early and play them in.

Let's hope young Jermain finally learns about the offside rule...

Dzeko would have been fab. But VDV is a hundred times better signing than any of your Babels, Muntaris, Carlton Coles, and deadline disasters like Rasiak and Frazier Cambpell.

panic buy in that i dont think he wasnt at all someone who we targeted imo as we have a ton of midfielders, 2 who are similar, he became available last minute and we snapped him up or tried to anyway having failed with our main targets which seemed to be young, parker and a top striker

maybe im wrong though, we'll see were he plays if we get him

But we dont have a single one that can play the role behind a lone striker. Maybe Modric comes close but VDV might be the goalscoring midfielder we have lacked for so long.

And finally we can switch to 4-5-1?

hmm yeah its taking quite long, probably too late and we arent united so we cant bend the rules , maybe we can buy him and get him in january then? although he might have other options then, im sure there are alot of clubs bigger than us willing to take him for 8 million.

am the the only 1 who think VDV is not necessary? pretty much does the same as modric and krancjar.

I think VDV is pretty good player but it's just not what is needed for Spurs.

Not sure what I think about this one if it comes off. Van Der Vaart of Hamburg was immense. If he can rediscover that form then we have a decent player.

Think the reaction is due mainly to the fact we may have signed a player.

I think I'm more amazed at the players still at the club.

If we want to play a 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 in Europe, VDV will be the one to score goals.

European line up

.............. Striker

Modric ,,,,,,,,VDV ,,,,,,,,Lennon

,,,Palacios/Sandro ,,,,,Huddlestone

Bale ,,,King ,,,,most in-form CB ,,,,,Charlie

.................Gomes
