Every top team has a goal scorer in midfield, something we have lacked, therefore relying too much on our forwards. VdV would give us that finally. I really hope this goes through, massive signing.

This.
Always blatantly evident when the strikers are misfiring.

am the the only 1 who think VDV is not necessary? pretty much does the same as modric and krancjar.

I think VDV is pretty good player but it's just not what is needed for Spurs.

I don't think you are alone.
I do think you are wrong.
The general concensus, I believe, was that we needed to make some changes in or striking options. That didn't come off. That doesn't mean that this is not necessary. It has been obvious for a long time that when our strikers are misfiring we don't have a player who scored enough form midfield. One solution is to buy more prolific strikers, who can play different roles to our current srop, so we don't miss the goals from midfield so much. Another solution is to buy a goalscoringmidfielder. These two options are not mutually exclusive.
Modric played in the middle at the end of last season as an emergency. We had no fit/available central midfielders...the game before, Kaboul played in there. The fact that it worked out doesn't mean 'Arry isn't going to want to move him back outside, on occasion.
VDV can also play the more advanced role in a 4-5-1 - something Modric can't really do, as he doesn't score enough.
We are still lacking the striker, of course, but if he hasn't pulled anything off by the deadline, I would expect that to happen in Jan - especially if the CL goes well.

necessary or not look at it this way

milner £24 mil

vdv £8 mil

If this goes through ( I believe it will the FA won't want to upset Real or Fifa) this is absolutely excellent business.
It is light years ahead of FrazCampbell and Rasiak. On that line of progression next deadline day we'll be signing Ronaldo!

On another note, think Levy's relationship building with Real Madrid finally paid off, like our efforts last summer to take Huntelaar/Negredo/etc that didn't go anywhere at the time but looks like we were first on their list to call when another opportunity arose.

I doubt Mourinho had too much to do with the transfer but I do think he has a soft spot for Spurs, I thought he might even have taken over for Jol instead of Ramos when he was getting fired from Chelsea if not for the one-year do not compete clause they put in his severance package.

Can't help but imagine him being pleased when we threw spanners into three of his successors title chases the last three seasons since he left too, with the 4-4 draw for Avram Grant, the 2-1 loss for Hiddink, and the, albeit eventually futile, 2-1 loss for Scolari last season.

this would be cooler than the coolest thing ever, VdV for 8 million in a clearance sale. Like Christmas in August.

We're all going to look like right dicks if he turns out a flop!!

Dude he was one of the stars of the WC helping Holland to the final. He was also one of Madrid's better players last season.

For £8m we will never look like dicks.

I wonder if it's worth pointing out that VDV, should the premier league ratify it, will cost 8m, while City have spunked 25m each on worse players in Milner and Silva. Neither is as much of a goal threat, neither is as good a passer and neither has as much technique. Yes, it could be argued that both are more straigh on midfielders, whereas VDV is a more attacking player, more of a number 10, bur for fuck sake to get him for a third of what David Silva or James Milner have gone for would be absolutely brilliant business.

He shouldnt be compared to Milner. City will always pay over the odds because the selling club know they can. Milner isnt worth £24 million, and city didnt want to pay £24 million - aston villa forced there hand on a player they knew city wanted and made them cough up.

But VDV is also in todays market not worth £8 mill. If we were negotiating at any other point during the window, he'd have cost us around 15 im guessing.

So to get him at 8 if it goes through is a bargain and a half. Quality player too.

Is this still only a transfer rumour or is it not now Spurs talk?

I hope it comes off but I fully expect Scudamore to get himself over to the Emirates just so he can give us the bad news from the Arsenal pitch, he has form trust me.

Not sure why there's negativity on him for £8m we'll get that money back on any of the surplus midfielders that so many SC'ers want to get rid of.

Unless the FA reject the registration and we missed out by seconds/mins due to a slow fax machine.....then as a club we might look like dicks Eek

Assuming this goes through, then assuming we play VDV off a striker who would you pick as your starting 11? (number one choice first team line up)
