Cabaye? Really? That's a shock. He must have had a mad half hour.

I found this quite surprising too, he could have played in the Champions League with Lille next season so why pick Newcastle who are quite frankly, a rather jolly crazy club...

Still no money in French football probably. Players get paid nothing compared to PL, and that is the bottom line to most of them.

Three reasons

1. Money
2. Joey Barton's warmth and Charisma particularly to foreign teammates
3. Warm climate

Berbs will be off to Italy this season i think. I don't think he wants to come back here, nor would Levy want him back.

Why would ManU sell the EPL top scorer for £7,5m and why would Berba move to Toons? He could get CL footy with many clubs in Europe.
"Berbatov, who cost United £30.75m in September 2008, has always liked Newcastle having idolised Toon legend Alan Shearer when he was a boy."
So Berba have been a closet fan of the Toons

Was well known even when he was with us.
Fan of Shearer/Newcastle & Basten/Milan

Dimitar BerbaGit has come out of hiding today to reveal: "It was my dream to play at Spurs...no-one can deny me my dream...for all of 5 minutes after I heard Spurs had put an offer in for me it was always my dream to play for Spurs."

No surprise to see the standard arguments against Berbatov coming out again. Take out the bitterness over his exit and you have a player who would put away all the ridiculous chances we missed this season, and link up our play fantastically. Can you imagine the chances Bale, Modric and VdV would set up for him? My only concerns would be a) United wanting Modric as part of the deal, an b) Levy being too proud to take him back. I personally would love to see Berbatov back again, and as I have said before, I think a lot of poster's tunes may be changed when he starts banging the goals in for us.

Mr Levy. Falcao and Berbatov please.

Berbatov was desperate to stay at United till the end of his career. Now, after Ferguson omitted him from the squad for the CL final, no-one knows what he would do.

He would probably prefer to return to Spurs rather than move back to Germany or sign for an Italian club. If he is ready to leave Man U and Spurs are ready to sign him, chances are he will rather play for Spurs than, say, Bayern or Milan. He likes to play in the PL, it's a better league than Seria A and the Bundelsiga.

I'll let you know if his agent or Berbatov himself says something interesting in the next days. He himself wouldn't want a Spurs star to be included in the deal, say Modric or Bale, as he would hope to play for a team that would challenge for the league.

Or, alternatively, if you actually read the thread, you would see that there are concerns about his impact at the club. On top of that, yes, the way he behaved is seen as something of an obstacle - this isn't just bitterness (as you call it with your innate air of superiority): it is also quite reasonable to suppose that if he came back and we came to rely on him, and then another of the clubs it has always been my dream...who can deny me my dream come in for him he would stitch us up and leave us in the lurch again.

Lose your googles - yes, we are bitter, do you understand why? But many of us have concerns about issue that would be specifically about him, in this club, today.

In short, if he could change his whole persona, develop more work-rate, and give some guarantee that he wouldn't stitch us up again, I wold find it easier to welcome him back, in spite of his behaviour the first time around - so, clearly, no it is not just about my inability to let go of my bitterness, that prevents me from being overly enthusiastic about this prospect.

They are your concerns and from what I've read so far, the majority doesn't share your opinion SP and the consensus is people would like him back at the club.

You tell me a better, realistic target that could do the job at the price being mooted.

From what I've seen, (and it is just a straw poll conducted in my head), actually I think more Spurs fans agree with me than not.

As I said, above, if he changed his persona, so I had no concern of his affect on the dressing room (which is, as I keep repeating, one of our strong points ATM) and develop a bit more of a work-rate, I would find the idea more palatable. Ditto, if we felt like we could trust him to not try to force through a transfer at a £13 million loss to us, and not refuse to play this time, the first time an offer comes in that he thinks is better.

But, as I said, if he did come back, I would instantly become his number one fan.

As for finding a better player at the price, well, yeah, that might be hard, but I am sure we could find as good, or better, prospects, who have hugely superior attitudes, and would have a much better sell-on value, if/when we sold them.

On the issue of dressing-room harmony - compare his reputation with the way Sandro has fitted in - much loved by the rest of the team, apparently, and great fun in the dressing room. Wouldn't you rather have a striker like that, than a 30 year old who has had a reputation following him for his acrid prescence in dressing rooms?

I can't believe Utd would sell Berbatov for £7.5M. They could easily get double that.

mixed. i think his workrate and attiude on the whole is viewed rather lazily by pundists and fans. he is prone and unfortunatley those games stand out but i recall many many games for spurs where his work rate and attitude were marvelous. Man city and bolton when we went down to 10 men were two standout performances. the carling cup run, against both chelsea and ar5ena1 the boy turned up and did almost all his best work off the ball in terms of workrate and movement.

He's prodcutive. goals and assists. the most productive player we've had in a long time. I think i can get over the 15% of shocking games you get from him if it means getting that productivity back.

Tactically if we get him and play 1 upfront we can cope with him not closing down CB's as well as defoe. heaven forbid chris samba getting the room to ping and inch perfect cross feild ball?

Our dressing room is different now and again, all the unrest stories came about when the move to United was materialising in Summer 2008. Berbatov had first talked about wanting to go to United in Summer 2007, which would make me think that promises were made...the unrest in the changing room didn't materialise until he was on the verge of a big money move (which would have fell through if he got injured, which both the club and the player knew), he was amazing for us in the last season, even with knowledge of United's interest.

You don't know the background story and I'm sure it's more complicated than Berbatov throwing a strop, I honestly think promises were made and when it looked like they were going to be brooken (DL's transfer tactics), then Berbatov threw the toys out of the pram.

People can change.

It's a shame though, you'd think the Champions League would be a pretty big deal to want to play in.

How comes Newcastle seem so darn good at picking up players too good for them that are money-grabbing mercenaries - why can't we do this!

I would be happy to get Berbs back but there is a part of me who would perhaps like a slightly different sort of centre forward.

Although if we also got Leandro it would mean he can be blooded nice and slowly like Sandro was, with Berbatov initially being the main man up top.
