But...you leave out the fact that our squad will improve naturally by virtue of being a young squad who now has another year's experience (not least the experience of playing in the CL) behind them. I don't think this can really be emphasised so much for any of our competitors. So it's not so cut-and-dried.
And...I really do not believe this obsession that we aren't going to sign anyone.

In relation to the squad being a year older and experienced that is what Wenger says about the scum every year........i think they prove you can't just rely on that!
Not his fault though. Had a value at the time and DL paid it.

But then Sandro only showed us what he can do from the Milan game onwards, if he is fit it' s an improvement, all players had a proper break this year with no World Cup and surely our strikers can't be any worse? I agree that we are already better than the start of the season last year before we have signed anyone.

Why is Forlan, a Copa winner and the best player at last years World Cup not a marquee signing?

Valuation wise no, of course not - it was bad business sense from Commolli and a rare brain fart from Daniel Levy.
However, that shouldn't excuse his pathetic attitude and aptitude to applying himself to our team and his mere presence acts as a timely reminder that we should think very carefully before spending a shed-load on players that could well haunt us financially for years to come.

Aye, we paid well over the odds for him, although I think his volley against the Scum probably puts him out of the running for that particular accolade.

It is a fair point to bring up the Goons in relation to a year's experience.
But for all his gifts (washes out mouth) Whinger has certain flaws in his character.
Firstly, he has never actually shown any signs of learning exactly what it takes to cut it in the EPL in the defensive department. He had his most successful period with the 'Keeper and central defenders he inherited when he first took the job. As those players retired so the trophies dried up. I really don't think Redknapp has that problem at all.
Secondly, a lot of our progress is contingent on keeping our best players. The Goons have struggled to keep hold of theirs as they mature. Redknapp has identified the need to get some experienced players amongst our youngsters. So, between keeping our best payers, who are getting more experienced, and bringing in some more experience, I don't think we will be in the same boat as the Goons.
And, I repeat, we will strengthen anyway.
