playing VDV RM in a 4-42 is suicide. Although he did score against the scum in that position he did not track back at all. Chelsea are EXTREMELY strong on their left with Cole and Mata. Walker will get isolated big time

Annoying thing is their is not one perfect scenario for balance without Lennon in the side.

I'm also now swaying towards Modric needed to play centrally. He was nowhere near his influencial best against Sunderland.

I'm sure Bale will be fit. So Bale Modric Parker Pienaar for me with VDV and Adebayor up top

Pienaar would give that defensive solidity plus cover for Walker for the excellent Cole and Mata

So...
Friedel
Walker Kaboul King Assou-Ekotto
Pienaar Parker Modric Bale
VanDerVaart
Adebayor

Subs: Cudicini Gallas Rose Sandro Kranjcar Defoe Pav (Res: Gomes Bassong Livermore)

Injured:
Corluka Dawson Huddlestone Lennon

I would worry about Mata and Sturridge attacking our full backs if Bale and Lennon are both out. After Sandro's performance against Sunderland it could be worth playing a midfield diamond (ish) with Pienaar?

Sandro Parker Pienaar
Modric

I think that Chelsea will be more worried about us than we will be about them. They will be delighted to get a draw (even if Bale doesn't play). Of course we must consider their strengths but first and foremost we must play to ours.

I love the idea of playing Sandro and Parker in front of the back 4 but

a. We're at home and in much better form and
b. It means for the sake of playing one player, breaking up a formation that has won 12 games in 13 (we beat Stoke let's be honest) and arguably playing two of our best players a little out of best position.

If King is fit then like the idea of pushing Walker up and Kaboul going RB. Kaboul was excellent there against Chels, Scum the year we finished 4th and we all know how good Walker is going forward.

However, for me, the best way to go is to keep everybody as they are replace Lennon 1 for 1. So as somebody said this is probably half a season early for Townsend. Kranky clearly isn't fit and has no pace anyway. Rose has bags of pace but is way too left footed (and too inexperienced).

So, I'll probably get slated for this but I reckon, for minimum disruption and for a right-footed outlet with pace on the RHS we should put Defoe (with strict instructions to look up and cross the ball and get back and help Walker)

Merson fancies us!:

Tottenham v Chelsea (7.30pm, Thu, Sky Sports HD1)
PAUL PREDICTS: 3-1
Chelsea fans used to call it Three Point Lane, but things have changed a bit now. I wasn't impressed with Chelsea at all on Saturday, it was a bad result to go to Wigan and draw - and in the end they were lucky not to lose it. I can see Tottenham beating Chelsea - and I see them doing it comfortably as well. If you can't win at Wigan then you can't win at Tottenham!

With Bale:

Friedel
Walker King Kaboul BAE
Modric Sandro Parker Bale
VdV
Adebayor
Modric won't really play on the right but with Walker's industry and two defensive minded midfielders he doesn't necessarily need to.

Without Bale I'd be tempted to go with Townsend on the left. Pienaar and Kranjcar could both play there but then we lose our width completely and I think if we can stretch Chelsea we'll have a good chance of causing them trouble.

Really not sure that would be effective at all. Can Defoe even cross? I'm sure his instincts would constantly bring him inside and I think Cole would keep him out of the game.

I agree with you about not shaking the tree in terms of formation too much, but if we lose our natural width (Bale and Lennon) then I don't think trying to compensate with players who aren't used to it will work against Chelsea.

Maybe playing Corluka/Bassong/Kaboul at RB and pushing Walker further forwards would be effective, but if Bale isn't fit we would still need to find somebody to play LW and I'm not sure Harry would pick Townsend or Rose over Pienaar or Niko.

With no Lennon Pienaar is the ideal man for right mid. Not only will he be able to help centrally against their 3 he will also be able to cover the forward runs of Walker. Without Lennon we need those runs from Walker more then ever

I think Bale will play. So 1 change for me: Pienaar in for Sandro

To be honest I like that a lot, and 3-5-2 has caused a lot of teams a lot of problems already (Napoli vs City). Actually weren't Wigan playing 3-5-2 on Saturday?

I just don't know if it'll work with the time we have to implement it.

Haha

"There's every chance Defoe will be fit. He's only got a grade one tear and he's desperate to play, the little fella'."

Hmm.. Hope that's not Harry almost giving in.

now is not the time to dick about playing people out of position or in different formations. square pegs in square holes please.

if bale is injured play nico in his place

lennon out play vdv wide right of three with modric and bale with parker and sandro as holding.

the game will be won in midfield.

friedel

walker kaboul (if not banned) gallas if he is King BAE

parker sandro

vdv modric bale/nico

game like this it has to be parker and sandro in middle all day long..

i can see argument for modric more middle but right now without the pacy threat of lennon or possibly bale then we need strength in middle of field. modric out left.

we wont be attacking for 90 minutes and have to respect players like mata and runs from ramires. having sandro in there can really help and nulify that.

i think a draw keeps chelsea at bay. a win wud be immense but lets not get carried away by going all out attack. its been our downfall for years. A strong, pressing in control of game and hoping for modric or vdv magic to open it up for us and we will win game but a strong spine and look to team is vital.

my biggest worry for game is actually sturridge on ekotto especially if he is not on it.

what happens without ball on our right hand side// its great playing cm type footy with formation like that but we will win this game with what we do without ball not with it imo, that takes care of itself.. too much of a gap playing vdv right of a 3 as you put it. harry admitted himself after arsenal that vdv on right does not work so its not going to happen even with sandro in there.

midfield has to be - bale parker sandro modric

without bale personally i wud be tempted with pushing walker up on right and kaboul behind. but harry wud know more if walker can do job as right midfielder but he certainly has the enrgy to do it. and wud probably put cole on back foot right from the off.. kaboul at right back brings strength and aerial presence when defending. if not that it has to be pienaar filling in but he is no great shakes imo.
