Imagine you had a nice tidy sum and you decided you would invest some capital into shares.
You get yourself a broker and he recommends that you invest your money in shares called 4-4-2,they start off badly but improve for a couple of months and things are looking quite prosperous.
Something unexpectedly happens and the 4-4-2 shares take an awful pounding. You lose all the profits you had gained and it’s a very worrying situation.
You call a meeting with your broker and decide on a different strategy, you had heard about these 4-3-3 shares and you knew a few guys who were making a tidy sum from little investment.
It's decided to take things steadily but to invest in the 4-3-3 shares.
For the next couple of weeks things are looking up,the future is looking brighter and the spring is back in your step.
However disaster looms it’s ugly head once again.
Your broker decides to dump your shares in 4-3-3 and reverts back to investing in 4-4-2 shares again!
Its an unmitigated disaster and your capital takes an awful beating.

You have lost all the profits that you had gained and your initial tidy sum is in a very precarious position indeed.

Would you keep your broker or get a new one?

I like the anaolgy, but thats not really the point of the thread is it?

If we acheive 4th place and an FA cup win, then this will be Totenham Hotspur FC's best season for decades. The man to achieve that feat would be one Henry Redknapp. on that basis, forget tactics etc, they are for another thread, how would you vote?

Well if we got 4th and won the cup I'd be pretty happy, but at the same time I think we need a new man in come the summer.

For the first half of this season we were title contenders, and though I never really thought we would win it I did think 2nd was a possibility, we have really messed it up whatever way you look at it. Time for a fresh start me thinks.

Charlton fans used to say the same thing about a fresh start from Curbishley, worked out well for them.

Obviously we have a great dquad and well-run club, but there are no guarantees in changing management (besides Mourino, Fergie). I hope this time next year we won't be looking back on the last few seasons nostalgically.

And in the context of the poll, we'd have a trophy and they wouldn't. In 20 years time, will anyone remember who came third in the league?

Non-Spurs fans, probably not - but finishing 4th two years ago, and the elation of it, will live in my memory as long as I shuffle around this mortal coil; it was like a Cup Final.

Irrelevent really, I think we are looking for a new manager in the summer whatever happens. If we did win the Cup and get CL then of course he shouldnt be sacked... but he is walking anyway IMO.

I hope you are right but the FA Cup has long since lost its magic for me.
Yeah, its a piece of tin with no real value now.
Other than a nice day out, what is it worth and how long will the memory last?
Will it console us all next year when the Champions league music starts on the TV?
It won't for me.

Someone asked me the other day to name the last 5 winners of the FA Cup,I hadn't a clue,I couldn't even remember the games.

However I was able to name the finalists in the Champions League for the past 7 years and name the winners of the Premier league since it began.

But Stemark, this thread isn't just about the FA cup is it, it's about CL places and the FA Cup. But on the subject of the FA Cup, are you not proud that we are 3rd in the all time winners list, do you not care about our history? Do you still go to games? and if so do you sing the song "...and if you know your History". If you do, but don't care about this "piece of tin with no real value now" why do you sing the song?

Has the FA cup really been that severly devalued? What a real shame that is :-(

I think being London's top club is right up there in terms of priorities for a lot of Spurs fans, mattyspurs. I think getting walloped 5-2 by Arsenal and going on to finish behind them after being in such a position of strength will leave a bitter aftertaste.

There's no trophy for being top London club and in a couple of years it's forgotten. Win the FA Cup and it's written down in history (though admittedly doesn't have the glory of the pre PL days). 4th still has Champions League (as long as Chelsea don't win the thing) so I'd definitely take 4th and an FA Cup win over 3rd. That amy still give them their St Totteringham Day or whatever they call it but let them have an open top bus for finishing above us while we parade the FA Cup

If Steffan Freund can make it into the Spurs hall of fame then why can't a manager who has delievered 2 top 4 finishes, a FA cup win, a runners up position in the League cup and a another semi final appearence in the FA cup.....? I'm no fan of Redknapps but he has contributed a hell of a lot more to our cause than Freund hence for me he is in!!!

Sorry Matt but I am not someone who dwells in the past, for me it's all about today and tomorrow.
This is 2012 and in the big world of football the only things that count now are League titles and Champions League winners.

What's was there to be excited about in our run to the semi finals this year?
We beat Cheltenham 3-0 at home,we beat Watford 1-0 away,we needed a replay to beat Stevenage and we beat Bolton at home and we all know what that game will be remembered for.
I could have taken us to the FA cup semi finals this season.

Couldn't have put it better myself. We haven't beaten one half decent team on our way to Wembley. Not one. In fact, we've made bloody hard work of it.

The things that make me proud of Spurs are being the 1st team to win a Double and the 1st English team to win a European trophy.
These things can never be taken away.
1st is everything!

I respect your opinion Stemark, but it really is such a sad state of affairs nowadys, that an FA cup win means so little.

I remember when I was at school, and whenever we used to have to stand up and do a talk about things, i always used to choose Spurs, and this was when I was 7 or 8 years old, in the '80s. I used to love reeling off our FA cup wins, The UEFA cup wins, League cup wins, Cup winners cup win, The two league title wins, double winners, being the first non league side to win the FA cup etc, I knew all the dates, still do.

Things like this, i will never forget, its a part of the club, a part of my family, and a part of me.

How anyone would still want rid of a man who, hypothetically, had just won us the FA Cup and got us Champions League football is beyond me.

There is no doubt that the FA Cup has been devalued, its the way it is, football and Society at large dictate that bigger is better and the FA Cup ain't very big standing beside the glamour and money that comes with Champions League etc

Sad but true.

Yeah that was great for us in the 60's,70's and 80's,we had a history to be proud of.
However as time as passed those trophies fade into nothing compared to the the likes of Liverpool,United and Arsenal.

Ok so let's say you are still 8 years old now, what are you going to stand up in class and say about Spurs.

We won a Carling Cup in 2008 and qualified for the Champions League once.

I think the rest of the class would be in tears from laughing.

I must confess the FA Cup still means a lot to me, I went to my first final in 1967 and have been to all our subsequent Wembley finals, I can still remember the euphoria that winning a cup means. Those occasions certainly stand out more for me than a lot of the crap league games I have seen us play in between times.
