If we are looking for a CAM what about Banega from Valencia, Rakitic from Sevilla or even Diego from Wolfsburg (though he is 28)?

A year or two ago I would have jumped at the chance of signing Eriksen but his supposed fall from grace is worrying? Has he not developed or has the hype surrounding him died? Anyway, I don't feel he is the sort of player we need (very similar to Gylfi), we need a creative winger, not an attacking midfielder and unfortunately Willian was the perfect option. I wonder if we could prize Shaqiri away from Bayern?

Guardiola seems to really rate Shaqiri (and no surprise, he's fucking outstanding...one of the most underrated players in world football). However, Shaqiri is much more a Bale type than a Eriksen type. The only way I see Shaqiri coming is if Bale goes and Lamela falls through.

We need a playmaker.

Completely disagreed. A creative attacking mid is EXACTLY what we need. I have no idea what's gone on inside Eriksen's head, but you have to imagine being as young as 20 and being linked with some of the world's biggest clubs and those moves not working out is a lot of pressure and a lot of disappointment. He may have faltered a bit psychologically, but a better squad around him and providing competition while playing in one of the world's best leagues could be a major spark under this kid's ass. He has shown himself in the past, including last year (against City in the Champs League specifically, fucking tore them to shreds in Amsterdam), that he does have the quality within. I think he'd do great with our level of pace and attacking style.

I totally agree we need a playmaker, just not from the central areas. Willian could have been the playmaker but from a wider position. I just don't think we need another central midfielder if we are going to play 4-3-3. Eriksen is more of the behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1 so if that is what were going to play then fair enough but imo, AVB looks set to implement a 4-3-3 and with the sheer strength we have with Paulinho, Sandro, Dembele and Capoue and also Holtby, I don't feel there is room to warrant a more central player, hence the creative winger option being appealing

Those midfielders you've listed, excluding a healthy Holtby, are not the ideal players to get the ball to that front line in ideal positions. Sure, they'd dominate any midfield, but they won't get us to score the amount of goals we need to be a truly top side.

Nonetheless, Shaqiri is still not that "creative player" that Willian is. He's a lot more Bale/Townsend than Willian.

Disagree on Eriksen. He is the type of playmaker that we actually need. Come on, he is only 21. Even Bale has his "downs" after joining us right up to when he was about 20 years old. But Willian would be a better option than Eriksen. He is more versatile (giving AVB more options, but the ship has since sailed) and have slightly better pace, but Eriksen (IMHO has better footballing brain) is no slouch too.....interesting to see how this pans out.

To be honest, I am still puzzled at Eriksen's miserable price tag, and the fact that he was passed over by so many clubs, including Liver, Dortmund, Milan, etc.
I suppose some scouts are probably turned off by his rather laidback and even nonchalant approach to the game, but still, the kid is only 21 (comparatively speaking, some people just begin university/college at this age, depending on the country). He is very young and has a huge upside. In the right coaching environment with proper motivation, he is likely to grow into an excellent modern trequartista, imo.
Either way you slice it, it would do us good to get him at such a low price. Worst case scenario (he doesn't work out for some reason), we can still recoup a couple mil and break even, but at least we took a chance on one of the most underrated young playmakers in Europe (who can potentially become a big star in the next couple of years). It'd be a shame if Pool or somebody like that buy him now and reap the rewards like they did with Coutinho (who was also passed over by some at a tender young age).

I only really have the time (and inclination) to watch my beloved Spurs, so I have no idea how good or bad these names being bandied about are.

Can I request a poll on the player threads with "excited beyond belief" or "so so underwhelming" as options? As you guys obviously watch these players, I'd rather your opinions than a biased youtube compilation.

I think this is nailed on after missing Willian. Also, don't understand why people are putting the lad down. He's a very talented young kid with massive upside. Very happy if we get him.

I wouldn't call it a fall from grace... just reality that a talented kid has joined the big boys.. just 21 now ... i'd take a healthy punt on him turning out a world class talent.

Lewis Holtby he is the player for this role, future star I think, give him game time (not as a sub) in his proper position No10 as he plays for Germany.

Banega is a deep lying CM. Diego is not that good. Rakitic is a good player, but doesn't get enough goals or assists for what we need.
