He was on a decline, we received a good offer for him and we took it. Sig we bought that summer because he was a bargain. A lot of people also say VDV forced the move because of his wife but I don't believe thats the case, I think he would have stayed

I don't think we did mate, we got rid because AVB told him Sigurdsson was better than him. Sig wasn't a bargain on the wages we gazumped Liverpool with either was he?

AVB wanted to implement a high pressing game, and he club probably reckoned that a guy that probably wasn't fit to play more than 60 minutes per game wasn't too suitable for that. Combined with VdV probably not wanting to be a impact sub or squad player, I'd say the time was right.

Came in to try and find out a bit about Stambouli and how he plays.

Instead I'm reminded of one of the stupidest bits of transfer business we have done in many a year.

Thanks guys...

Never understood this bullshit? He was our top league goal scorer and assister in his first season with us, does nobody remember his contribution in the second half at the Emirates when we turned around a 2-0? Running the length of the field when we had 10 men to finish off the counter attack at Villa Park after Defoe had been sent off early? Scoring in the last minute against Stoke to equalise at home on a cold Tuesday night? Where does this shite come from that he only lasted 60 mins? Just because Redknapp usually took him off and replaced him doesn't mean it was because he was blowing out of his arse.

Not quickly enough obviously. If I was VdV, I'd have wanted maximum 5 seconds before laughing and saying he was joking before I roundhouse kicked him.

I know you will say this is just me being pro AVB, but I find the whole story a bit dubious. It sounded more to me like VDV trying to stay onside with Spurs fans to me.

JJ had said long before all that blew up that if Hamburg came up with the right money that VDV would probably be off. I don't think he left just because of his misses, I think it was a combination of things that suited all parties. Levy knew he'd never get that sort of offer again for a player who was continually suffering with niggling injuries, VDV could get back to his misses and kids and a club that held him in high regard and he and his agent got a last bumper pay day.

I think what he actually said was that 'Levy would listen to offers for him', then clarified it with Levy would always listen to offers for anyone, but wouldn't always accept them.

You can believe what you want, but it's a bit disingenuous to ignore all the reports, including quotes from VDV, when you are so quick to utilise them to your advantage when the case arises.

It's another internet factoid, in this case promulgated by people who want to diss AVB.

VDV didn't say anything about Sigurdsson being 'better', nor have I seen any evidence that AVB said anything so clumsy and tactless. According to VDV, he reckoned he deserved to be the first choice starter and AVB wouldn't guarantee him that role, because of Sigurdsson's arrival.

Given that AVB had recently arrived at the club and didn't know the players well, it was a reasonable stance to take, but did not allow for VDV's very substantial ego, nor for his status as an established star at the club.

Well he was subbed on 70 for the Hamburg relegation playoff that saw them squeeze back into the top league in May. Not the first time either . Still , he's a couple years on now .

VDV has been terrible since he left Spurs. AVB can feel totally vindicated on that one.

He was struggling to get past 70 mins in his last games with us.

Hamburg are shite, and he was only ruled out of the World Cup through injury.

Not going to go over the 70 minute thing again.

I'm not ignoring them, not dismissing them either, just seems a bit of an odd tale. One day he's actually telling a player like VDV that he's behind Sig in his plans (hard to believe that anyone would think let alone feel the need to say this) then a week later he's telling him he's not but by then it's too late because he's decided he wanted to go back to Hamburg because of this ?

I could more believe that he may have had a conversation with AVB where he was demanding assurances because he had other offers, and AVB just wouldn't give him them, saying something like "we've just bought Sig so you'll have to fight for your place".

Sounded to me like he was looking forward to the transfer pay day and Silvie in his bed at nights already and was looking to share a little of the blame.

If AVB (or any coach) was to actually say it the way it's been relayed then they deserve criticism. If it;s a player you desperately need to shift I can understand being honest and saying "you are not going to be my first choice" but not VDV that summer.

Depends what you believe then, and you'll always side with AVB, I wont.
