Awful result

Why even give them a chance of progressing. The atmosphere at Brammall Lane will be electric next week and if they get an early goal, we're in for an extremely tricky evening

Gotta disagree with you man. Gave up no away goals and nicked us one in a shit performance at home. I'd happily have taken that result if offered it before kickoff. The priority in a home first leg is absolutely to not concede the away goals.

Don't see the negativity - it's been a good enough result in a game where it was never going to be a goal fest.

Sheffield Utd got to the Semi Finals on merit, beating PL teams along the way, and were FA cup semi finalists last season too, beating PL teams also.

They came to WHL to suffocate our players and block our strengths, and they did that quite well. Pretty similar tactics to what you'd expect from any PL team parking the bus, in all fairness.

If anyone thinks this should have been a stage for us to crush Sheffield United with attractive football and goals galore needs to point me to the last time a PL team actually dominated them in a game.

One step closer to Wembley - Slightly twisting the words of Oleta Adams - "I don't care how we get there, let's get there if we can"

My concern is that in all of these games we keep trying to play the same way and continuously bang our heads against a brick wall. It would be ok/understandable if we played tippy-tappy football well and backed ourselves to cut teams apart with free flowing moves... but we don't.

For me personally, its not very good to watch. Very frustrating.

The two big problems, were us being complacent in possession at the back and getting the ball stolen off us, or passing it straight to them.

The other problem, is the players off the ball are too static in attack. We pass it from wing to wing every game, and we never get a goal in the box out of it.

The goal came from being more direct and chipping it straight into Soldado. Poch has to coach us to be more dangerous in possession.
Damn right. Even though they were organised , we broke on several occasions only to run down a blind alley, misplace a pass or just simply choose the wrong option. It's so infuriating when you can see it. Poch needs a couple of more intelligent guys in.

yay so much positivity in here!

We've struggled against teams that play like this for the longest time so it was hardly a surprise. A clean sheet, a win and no injuries, hardly the end of the world. Away at Sheffield we should be able to sit back and hit them on the break - assuming of course that Jan doesn't concede a silly free kick just outside the box!

Our lack of pace and width was evident tonight and neither Walker or Davies really got forward which I think was part of our problem but presumably also part of the manager's instruction.

Away goals don't count in league cup?

They do, they just don't end the tie in regulation time as in most competitions if they decide the difference. In the LC, you do get extra time on an even number of goals, but they do still count after that is played before going to penalties.

Proper arrogant, its no wonder lower league clubs think PL clubs are supported by wankers.

We have no devine right to beat any team, let alone in a cup semi final.
I'm not saying we have a right. Why on earth would I not expect us to put a club 45 places below us to the sword? Upsets happen yeah but we have more than enough quality to stick a few past them

Conveniently you didn't highlight the part where I admitted it would be difficult at their ground

You may think a striker who gets barely a quarter of his attempts on target and who has scored just three league goals from open play in 42 appearances/2500+ minutes worthy of a regular starting place, It takes all sorts.

But he links up play well (I know this because I watched the game vs City), he works really hard for the team and I'd rather play him over Ade because Ade only scores once every 2.5 games which is awful, get rid of the lazy mercenary!!!!!

Maybe in a tough European game. Don't mean to sound patronising but I don't think you appreciate how difficult away fixtures are to lower league teams in England.

Not great tonight but Sheff United will need to come out and attack in the return leg. I know people are disappointed that we didn't put on more of a show tonight but I am confident we'll finish the job. Not saying that the return will necessarily be a feast of attacking football but without wishing to disrespect a league one side who have made the semi finals, I find it hard to be defeatist (or 'realistic' as some might call it).

Seriously hate to go on about this, especially as he scored our only goal, but Townsend seems to be such an ineffective winger, his dribbling drives me nuts. He runs into blind alleys, hardly ever goes past his opponent and does stepovers at the most ridiculous positions on the field I can't help but laugh. He needs to watch a video of Ronaldinho or R9onaldo to see how to use them effectively to beat a man.

I want him to do well especially considering the long path he has taken to the first team but he really needs to have a long hard look at his game before Poch loses patience with him.

How did Adebayor play? Was he subbed at half time?

He was a bit 'meh' tonight. No better or worse than any of this season's performances from either him or Bobby. He worked hard imo but we were pretty woeful in general going forward.

Of course not. Where did I say that? I simply compared the performance tonight to the way we used to play under AVB.
You didn't. I just got the impression that it was hinted at because you said just before he got the sack.

Spot on 225. Home game in the first leg in a team that had nothing to lose but work their socks off defending us in attempt to frustrate us as these smaller sides do so easily. We conversely, have still not seen a decent rest since the beginning of December and of course have played consistently more demanding competition. Not delighted of course, but I'm very satisfied with a 1-0 result in the home first leg. Take that every single time against any given competition.

Since when is winning an awful result? I predicted 2-1, so this is actually better as they don't have an away goal. Mate, it could have been worse.
Yeah, I'm just overreacting because of the performance I think

Just frustrating when you consider the gulf in class between the two sides
