'Former Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas............... and we didn’t get any of the targets I had identified, such as Joao Moutinho, Willian, Oscar or Leandro Damiao.'

I'd guess that the majority of managers in the PL would say the same, with a couple saying they got one or two of their top targets.

The trick of the transfer market is to start with realistic targets who will improve you (for the first team) or be young with great potential (squad players) with a few at least 'solid' (if bought for the squad - but hopefully we don't need these any longer)...........but always to have a Plan B, C, D... where your top first choice player is not available (even Real Madrid, Man U et al do that).

The other key trick is to recognise which youngsters are coming through the Spurs Academy and plan how to introduce them as Spurs squad players - even some of the best 'looking' academy products will not make it but the % who do make it as squad players will probably be better than the % of bought players who fail to adapt to PL or Spurs environment. So its much lower risk than buying players - but obviously essential to both develop our own as well as buying 'ready made' players..

One line defines the situation properly :-
"He will work with Paul Mitchell, his former head of recruitment at Southampton, who was brought in by Levy earlier this season".
So the story is really, "Paul Mitchell brought in" which is actually a few months old but can be considered as Pochettino's first signing I guess.
There seems little point him coming in if he isn't going to work with Poch.

AVB forgot he had moved from Chelsea.

It seems to have rubbed off on some fans. For example, we buy Dele Alli and Chelsea buy Pogba.......we must all try to get used to it.

Fyi i never said about buying players like pogba who are out of our league, i quoted what avb said quite different i know we cant compete.

..

Yes, Brendan Rodgers could easily point the finger at his board for failing to sign Siggurdsson, Dempsey and Willian.

Shit happens and managers need to have a Plan B.

In what other business is manager the least secure position?

Well its endemic in football, and the average of a PL manager is about 2 years. So Poch is half way through the average.

Reality is that if there is a 25 man squad and 5 new players come in a year - it will take 5 years for a Pl manager to get 'his own squad'.

So reality is that typically by the END of most PL manager's tenure the majority of his squad will have been his predecessors choice of players !

I don't like coaches being too involved in HR - it's not their specialism. I'd much rather they focused on our own squad, than had any sort of detailed knowledge about other clubs' players.

I think this is typical 'pie & chips' DoF hate from the red tops. We've had one for 25 years now, but the neanderthals still try and dig the knife in at any opportunity

Maybe a clever way of washing his hands of any failure in the future. So Poch has control of the names he wants but he needs to sell the unwanted at Levy's asking price to generate the revenue with which he can bring in re-enforcements, again at Levy's valuation.:)

What I think is the jist of all this is the manager is a big part of the procurement process 'now'.

Mitchell isn't as senior as some people seem to think. He's one of 4 new senior scouts brought in to work under Baldini. Mitchell wasn't head of recruitment at Southampton either - he worked under Les Reed.

I think Mitchell is definitely the man who'll be driving transfers this summer.

If i was Levy i would let Poch tell me where he sees a potential buy could fit.
However the ultimate decision sits with Levy.
Only Levy has all the information (financial/football) to make the decision. No one from the footballing side can.

So long as it's the exit bus for half the fuckers Baldini spent 100 million on two seasons ago a shit i do not give. At the end of the day Baldini and Levy will have the ultimate say whatever anyone else thinks, or the bullshit red tops print.

Baldini is more of a fix-it man now imo. A deal closer/sweet talker.

I think Mitchell is definitely the man who'll be driving transfers this summer.

He's a computer geek. He writes algorithms to predict future performance levels of players. He's built his own supped-up Football Manager.

He doesn't have a strategic overview though, nor much experience of watching players in the flesh.

This new techy side is very important, but it's just one component of Baldini's new team.

Rob Mackenzie and Stuart Metcalf are the same level as Mitchell/his peers.

Do you know who Ismail Azzaoui, Musa Yahaya and Rares Lazar are?

Some of Baldini's recent 'ones for the future' signings.

He's definitely still active in the field.
