Tottenham hand transfers control to manager Mauricio Pochettino ahead of planned summer revamp

Mauricio Pochettino has won his bid to have overall control over transfers at Tottenham.

No player will join Spurs without the Argentine’s prior approval - and any deals that can be done by chairman Daniel Levy will be run by manager Pochettino first.

Pochettino claimed last week that he wanted to be the man in charge of players coming in during Tottenham’s revamp this summer.

Levy, technical director Franco Baldini and chief scout Ian Broomfield have all previously been involved.

Pochettino, however, will now get the control he wants as he looks to offload their underachievers and bring in the players Spurs hope will help them into the top four.

He will work with Paul Mitchell, his former head of recruitment at Southampton, who was brought in by Levy earlier this season.

Levy is understood to be hugely impressed by Pochettino’s work so far and is willing to place his faith in the Argentine’s recruitment this summer.

As we revealed yesterday, the club want at least one more striker, reinforcements in midfield and at least two more defenders while up to seven players are up for grabs.

Former Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas, who was sacked in December 2013, has claimed that players were brought in over his head during his time in charge.

He said: “The chairman proposed a challenge to increase Tottenham’s competitive level, but immediately [Luka] Modric left and we didn’t get any of the targets I had identified, such as Joao Moutinho, Willian, Oscar or Leandro Damiao.

“These were promises that were not kept. I had a group of players I had not chosen.

"In two years, I lost [Rafael] van der Vaart, Modric, Bale, and all the promises made were unfulfilled.”

Spurs strongly refute the accusation, however, and maintain Levy worked with Villas-Boas and Baldini to land their targets jointly.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have joined the clubs monitoring Manchester City right-back Micah Richards.

Sunderland and Inter Milan are already interested in the 26-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season and is currently on loan to Italy's Fiorentina.

Richards would be seen as potential competition for Kyle Walker, despite the January arrival of USA international DeAndre Yedlin at the same position.

The club also have high hopes for 18-year-old Kyle Walker-Peters, who can play on either side and has impressed while coming through their academy.

I'll believe it when I see it. To be fair regarding AVB's targets we did try to sign those 4 players. Chelsea beat us to Oscar and Willian, while the Moutinho deal fell through at the last moment due to 3rd parties, and Leandro dragged on forever and seems to be another 3rd party ownership issue.

I guess Baldini still remains the man to try and tie these deals up and I think he did a good job with the likes of Lamela and Soldado. As long as Poch identifies who he wants with Mitchell advising him and Baldini closing the deal. All it requires is Daniel Levy refusing to pay the transfer fee and scrambling for an alternative

Well I appreciate Daniel Levy is a great businessman but for someone who splashed huge money on players like Soldado, Paulinho, Lamela, Bentley, Bent.. he sure does spend a lot of time negotiating. Our transfers take far too long to complete and that's why we end up with panic buys and last minute alternatives.

I hope Mitchell does a good job finding affordable players this summer because he's working to Daniel Levy's budget.

I along with many others on here, thought we had bought some good/great addition to the squad. Just goes to show how hard it is at our level.

Ask liverpool fans, I'm sure they would agree. ;)

I think a lot of clubs have been guilty of spending big money on players who have then turned out to be a disappointment.

Shevchenko £30m + @ Chelsea
Di Maria £50m+ @ Man U
Robinho £30m+@ Man City
Ozil £40m+ @ Arsenal
Carroll £35m @ Liverpool.

It's not just a Spurs thing...

AVB forgot he had moved from Chelsea.

It seems to have rubbed off on some fans. For example, we buy Dele Alli and Chelsea buy Pogba.......we must all try to get used to it.

True, but most of those clubs can afford to make those mistakes, at this point in time we haven't got the finances for big money signings not to work out.

I'm not saying it is. We just seem to have no real direction to how we approach the transfer window. We just need to buy the players to suit our system rather than miss out on one player and sign someone completely different (stylistically) as an alternative.

For the record, Osvaldo was brilliant at Espanyol. I believe we were linked with him whilst he was there. He ended up going to Roma instead.
He's a quality player who just has the odd fit of 'super volatility'. Cool dude though.
