Surprised Liverpool would go for Benteke when they have Sturridge, Balotelli, Ings, Lambert and Borini already. However, if true, may well explain the news regarding Villa looking at Townsend, and as others have said, you wouldn't rule Sherwood out of going for Ade too. If the fee for Townsend was high enough, I wouldn't be stunned to see no fee for Ade, to help Villa manage his wages, and just get him out of our club.

The JJ info about plenty going on behind the scenes is positive. Equally, with Kaboul suddenly looking close to being off, Stambouli hinted at agreeing terms with PSG, media suggestions Chiriches is closing in on Galatasaray, and that Sevilla are looking closely at Soldado also, the decks are truly looking like being cleared. I think a spate of outgoings over the coming days, may just open up the door for another singing or two in.
All ITK suggests DM, CF then a WF/CF to wrap things up. I think with Townsend and Lennon hovering at the exit, a pacey WF is looking just as important as DM & CF. Maybe with both out, the feeling is one in plus Pritchard and possibly even Onomah filling the gaps behind the senior players.

More from the "un-named"...

"
Deal done, 3 year deal, £3m.
In Sunderland now, medical very soon

Good deal for all parties I reckon.
Let's just hope he passes it!"

Who is this about?

OK, so Bizness was on holiday in Sunderland? Or getting medical insurance for his holiday?

Very weird, I thought Bizness had a future with us.

If that's the case then fair enough. But if it was the case then i feel we would have pulled the trigger on this already, or be very close to doing so right now.

I don't think the club rate him as the best DM player we could sign right now, and that is the bit that concerns me when looking to pay £20m for him.

Well I think the manager probably wanted to see what the deal with the Schneiderlin situation was. It's understandable that we wait a bit, if that's the number one target.

It's likely that McCarthy is one of a number of options we are looking at. The one we end up getting will be at the end of a price/benefit/availability analysis.

My point being that if we end up paying £20m for McCarthy, I hope people don't just look for every little flaw in his game just because he cost £20m. A bit like Lamela really. The fact that Lamela was never a ready-made £26-£30m player, but just cost that because Roma didn't want to sell him, is kind of lost on people when he is a hard-worker and contributed to one of the highest numbers of assists in the squad last season.

I'd go so far as to say Lamela is our most likely player to create a chance out of nothing, but still people think for £26-£30m, you should be getting some Messi-esque character that can just beat anyone and score whenever he feels like it.

You say that, but then look who we've signed so far and for the prices we've paid. TV money has added some value on, but £49m for Sterling has as much to do with City's deep pockets and desperate need for a home grown attacking player now Milner has left as anything.
$49 mill for Sterling ridiculous, just shows you how out of control money is in football its ruining it!

TImes have changed too

With Sky money you even have to pay 10m+ for the likes of Shane Long and Steven Fletcher

£20m is about the right price in today's market for a young experienced and established international

Part of the dislike of him coming is he does not have a glamour name, if his name was Jaminho and he was Brazillian people would have their boxers round their ankles with excitement

I think we've firmly established that Brazilian players signed by Spurs are fecking hopeless. ;) But i get your point.

Who cares what the club decide to pay for a key player? I think some of us get swept up in the Nil net spend too much. Regardless of what people think of McCarthy most agree he will give a near guaranteed performance level. Only way he flops is if he gets injured often.

He brings no glamour, shirt/ticket sales or overseas exposure to the club. IF we do end up buying him we the transfer committee feel he's worth it for purely footballing reasons. That works for me.

I'm not set on McCarthy as the only option, but he's a good one. I just want us to get a good one in by the opening game.

I honestly don't think he would give a shit if he had a year's sabbatical and picked up his wages.
What you on about? All brazilians at spurs have been legends! Paulinho, Gomes, Gilberto...hmmmm, maybe you were right. Gotta have some love for Sandro though ^_^

When are people going to start understanding, its about building a 'team' and putting in the appropriate pieces to build it - instead wanking over individual names.

You refer to the potential transfer as 'uninspiring' but, thankfully, the club don't complete transfers in terms of how much they excite people. Most were extremely excited in 2013, but it turned out to be a disastrous transfer window.

You've both missed the point I'm afraid.

I didn't call him uninspiring - I said it would be one of the most uninspiring 'big money' signings we'd ever made.

If we were picking him up for about £8m, I'd still be largely indifferent because I simply don't think he's a particularly good player, and we've signed endless amounts of fairly decent blokes over the last few years and we're constantly looking for ways to get rid of them very soon afterwards.

For £15m+ I think it's a ridiculous transfer, and the only reason he costs that's much is the fact that he's 'homegrown'.

I'm not after signing Pogba - fortunately I never said anything like it or even hinted at it either so where either of you picked that up from to load into the saddle bags of your high horses I don't know. The idea of saying 'I don't get it it's about building a team' is laughable.

If you'd said in May that our biggest signing of the summer was going to be James Plodding McCarthy, SC would've gone into meltdown. By now, of course, the usual suspects have begun convincing themselves that it wouldn't be so bad after all, despite the fact that he's demonstrably no better than Bentaleb or Mason, and is a world away from the likes of Morgan S in terms of ability.

Well done for assuming me commenting on the mentality of SC members means I want to spend £30m on Jesus Midfieldos though

To be honest if the club think McCarthy is the right man for the job I'm not overly concerned what we pay.

For me it is the single most important position for us to sort out this Summer so if it takes 20m to do it then fine. I reckon it'll end up being worth it in the long run.
The thing is once again he wasnt our first or probably 2nd (Kramer) choice for that role. Its frustrating but what can you do? Im happy if MP is though!!
