However you shuffle that lot I have a good feeling that with out additions we will have goals in us. Despite the lack of another striker we have a much more balanced squad now.

Agree there. There's enough versitility in the team to crack on. Sure, another striker was needed, but I don't think it's the end of the world. I think it's possibly why Lamela was kept from going on loan. So he can slot in when Kane needs a rest / injury.

DM seems covered. Dier, Vel' and Toby can play there. Mason is fairly handy.

Overall, not too shabby in my book. Well see.

I think the big question is whether Poch is prepared to move away from his favoured 4231 in some games.

If Son or N;Jie can play as a striker, then fine, no change needed maybe.

Otherwise I hope that Poch will coach the players to play a 460 style formation - its most well known use being by the Spanish a few years ago, think they won euros using it.

The great advantage is that opposition CB's really don't like defending against a side without a recognised striker, and too often fail to pick up the players rotating with each in turn acting as target men. Spurs u21's used it a couple of seasons ago when we didn't have a decent u21 striker and walloped both Chelsea and Arsenal amongst others.

With Son and N;Jie joining our existing AM's there's enough goalscoring ability to make 460 work well.

Just needs the manager to be tactically flexible....

He's going to need to put his dynamic hat on.

Well, now that the window has closed we can know what we're playing with this season (until Jan, at least).

Goalkeepers - Lloris & Vorm
It's a massive bonus to have kept the big Frenchman in goal. Our only truly world class player at the club. Vorm is a good backup and I reckon we have a really good pairing here. No complaints from me.

Defenders - Walker, Trippier, Rose, Davies, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Dier, Fazio, Wimmer

Not a bad defence, certainly an improvement on last year. We've got strength in numbers here. Rose has been great over the last 12 months and long may he continue. Davies is a decent backup, particularly for the cup games. Trippier is a welcome additin and I hope he gets games soon to really give Walker something to think about. We've not seen Wimmer yet and Dier has been putting a shift in elsewhere. Fazio didn't leave and I'm not too bothered about that. I think he can do a job in Europe and in those games where we may need a big lump to mark another big lump. I'm really hoping that Jan and Toby kick it off together, and I've been pleased with what I've seen so far. My only issue is that I would've liked a stronger, more robust centre back in that mix in place of Fazio. He'll do a job, but I don't think he's cut out for this league.

Midfielders - Bentaleb, Mason, Carroll, Dembele, Alli, Eriksen, Pritchard, Chadli, Lamela, Townsend, N'Jie

Well that's a lot of midfielders, and I'm not even counting Dier who looks to be our current ball-winning midfielder. My major concern is that we lack a real experienced head in there. I remember back when we signed Parker and how him and Modric absolutely bossed the midfield. I feel we're missing a leader in there with plenty of experience. The young lads are going to have to step up and I hope the more experienced ones like Dembele can help with that. Our most creative sparks happen to be the younger ones. Eriksen, Pritchard, Carroll and possibly Alli (not sure how he plays yet, to be honest). I don't think Carroll will feature much, and I do hope that Pritch forces his way in. Townsend and Lamela are still question marks as they often flatter to deceive, but who knows. Bentaleb and Mason are quite bipolar in fan opinion, in that they go from being liabilities to talismanic from game to game. They struggle to find consistency. Chadli and Eriksen need to provide the same amount of goals/assists, perhaps more, so they've got to step up a little more. N'Jie is the new boy, and I hope his pace can be put to good effect. Son could be classed here but he's a striker on our site. So that leads me to...

Strikers - Kane, Son, Adebayor

Well, I can't quite believe I'm counting Adebayor here as I'm sure we all expect him not to feature for us. He is, however, in the team and should anything happen to Kane he's our only proper, experienced #9. Unless, of course, Son or N'Jie can play that role. Son is listed as a striker on the OS, but I reckon he'll primarily play in the attacking 3 behind Kane, but if we really do need to rest Kane then he can be played there. I do hope Poch has been paying attention in training (and trusting his scouts) when he says Son and N'Jie will be able to play up top, but if they're clearly not meant to be proper strikers as I don't think we'd have been going in for Berahino until the final minutes of the window. We're certainly light here and I'm quite disappointed to not see another player in that could play as a proper #9.

Edit: In summary, it's not a bad team by any stretch of the imagination, but it's certainly not a top 4 team. Not without another proper striker and an experienced head in central midfield that can take the game by the scruff of the neck. At least, however, we cleared out a lot of deadwood. Decent transfer window. Not great, but certainly not bad.

I'm happy Veljkovic gets a chance, think he is better than anything we could have got.
The thing is he won't get a chance, because Fazio is here. We really should of got rid of him regardless if we got a new DM or not

Son, Njie, Chadli and Lamela will all be highly pressured for minutes given our bloated AM corps - presumably they'll be tried in sequence up front till one of them works out. That's not terribly terrible odds considering that they've all played there for top flight teams before, and especially that there's four of them.

So now it's a good thing not having recognised strikers because it confuses the opposition lol.
Fk me I've heard it all now.

Nice post. It is easy to forget many of us thought Lloris would be playing else where. Keeping him has been a major transfer window success. Lets not over look that.

Only thing i'd differ on, is that I think Poch will play Lamela as a back up Striker, possibly instead of Son. If I am correct in having read that Son is 2 footed, I think he'll be a huge asset in the attacking 3, thus unlikely to be moved from there. I think Lamela might benefit from playing further forward in some games, the space he makes himself could come off there. That said, if he (Son) has been listed in the Spurs team as a striker as opposed to an AM, then I could be talking cobblers.

All in all, it's still a healthy team IMO.

Lamela or Chadli could do a decent stand in to January.

I take it you weren't at the Stoke game a few weeks back. Chadli went up front when Kane was taken off and that was the sole reason we lost the game. He couldn't hold the ball up, meaning we faced wave after wave of attack. I think both him and Lamela can play up front in a two, but the lone striker role in a 451 is a really difficult position and certainly not one that either Chadli or Lamela can play. I'm not informed enough to comment on whether Son could fill in. I hope so. Otherwise we better hope Poch and Levy make up with Adebayor.

Lol, does anyone seriously think we will buy anyone of note in January ? All we ever do in January is sell. In the last 5 years the only players bought in January who have featured in the first team in that season are Holtby (a panic due to injuries) and before that Pienaar (barely played). Given we've set a pretty predictable pattern anyone thinking we will be back in for Berahino or an alternative in January is seriously deluded. This is it for the season.

Nope. I wasn't there. But 1 game doesn't tell the whole story. That said, I don;t disagree with you mate. I didn't say it was ideal, but if there's no other option? Personally, I think Poch needs to change to a 4-3-3 in this case. The squad is crying out for it. However, if Poch shows some dynamism and changes things i'll be shocked. See what happens.

I remember a couple of years back there were comparisons being made between our first 11 and the scums , the general consensus was that it was a fairly even split between the two clubs. Now only Lloris and Kane would get anywhere close. I think that in itself shows how far we've fallen

I don't follow that logic. Just because Spurs haven't signed much in January before, doesn't mean they won't if needs must this time around. Who knows, my delusion is permitting me to think that the team might actually play well.
