Also, sometimes the bigger picture in terms of the Clubs needs can distort, IMO at least, the values concerning individual players.

Lets take a hypothetical situation, one which isn't too far fetched either.

We have people arguing over the valuation of Berahino - but will anyone really care if we pay 15 million or 20 million for Berahino if Kane got injured and he came in and scored some crucial goals that contributed to us securing Champions League football....would we still be arguing over a 15 million or 20 million price tag? I think not.

I'll back and trust what the Club decide to do but for me we're in a pretty unique position at the moment. The League is wide open and highly unpredictable. Yet we're 5 points off the top and sit in fourth place over half way through the season. We have one recognized center forward who possesses the quality we need to stay near the top.

We all know that Son isn't a center forward and neither is Njie really who is out long term anyway.

We shouldn't be paying way over the odds in terms of what we value a player at but at the same time we need to be balancing this against our individual needs in the here and now - to let the former completely dictate the latter would be really disappointing given our position and the circumstances of the League this season.

In the past fotnight poch has said

We have others in the squad who can play striker, like son and chadl, njie when fit

If we can sign a good striker i can play him with Kane, you have to find a way to include your best players

If we can't sign one I'm happy with what I've got , although I might promote an academy player

Even accounting for his English, this is all over the place. You're being very kind in suggesting this might be to sell dummies to the media, to mask our true intention, whateverc the hell that is...

We seem to be sleepwalking again into early cup exits, with eggs lobbed into the basket marked fourth when we should be competitive across all competitions with another quality striker on our books by now. Its the most important position in the squad alongside keeper. Why oh why.

The situations changed in my opinion.

In the summer Peace probably looked at us and thought we were short of a striker to be competing for top 8 let alone top 4. He saw us as desperate and tried to squeeze every last penny. And yet here we are, sat 4th with a unique opportunity to do something special.

Maybe there are alternatives now? Maybe we are not so desperate (Dembele the alternative), maybe the manager not so keen on Either?

Berahino wants to come to Spurs. Newcastle can offer more but it would still be down to the player. We are in the driving seat and the value of the rumoured bid reflects that.

Wouldn't say that he's all over the place, per se... It seems much more the case that he, like everyone else, isn't sure yet exactly where we'll be squad wise come the end of the window.

To me, it says that if there is the opportunity to get someone in who improves of, we'll take it, but if it doesn't transpire we will/can/are able to work with what we have...

... which to be fair, is what he's been saying for weeks.

Not many more desperate than us

We are 4th in the league, so there's 16 teams more desperate than us. Anyone in the bottom half in particular.

In fact only us, Leicester, Arsenal, Palace and Watford are really overachieving so far this season

ali z: Working hard to do a deal or 2, very hard getting players you want in Jan, as I understand it SB and MD most likely.

Absolutely.

And I get frustrated with this 'it's hard to improve what we already have' spin that keeps getting churned out. I remember HR saying exactly the same when we had Pav struggling to hit a barn door....Suarez? Nah, i'll give that a miss!

It is hard, it will be difficult but there are forwards out there that can improve us. That's for poch and the recruitment team to earn their money.

There will be no excuses IMO if Kane ends up getting injured and we end up finishing 5th playing the 'false 9'.
