Surprised at the largely negative tone in this thread. We were clearly the better side for the entire game and were really unlucky to lose. They pretty much had 2 shots on target and scored from both, goals which came from our mistakes (Lamela and Vertonghen for the first and Walker for the second) and a bit of luck (I mean how often will the ball fall that kindly for an attacker in their box). Luck which we just didn't have. We also could have been much more clinical in front of goal, with Kane in particular wasting an excellent opportunity.

Toby and Alli - who were both excellent - clearly our best imo with Vertonghen and Lamela struggling. Staggered at the higher ratings for Lamela than Eriksen tbh, He seriously fucked up for their first goal and made a number of errors besides. Eriksen didn't create a whole lot, but he wasn't actively damaging to our chances like Lamela was at times - I am an avowed Lamela fan, but he was mostly dreadful.

Kane was good and bad in varying degrees, but he really should have scored after being set up by Janssen. The Kane of last season would have scored that.

Dembele with an encouraging half and Sissoko with a very encouraging cameo other positives. In terms of the group, the CSKA-Leverkusen game ending in a draw was a positive for us as well. It only leaves us a single point behind the pace.

thought he worked hard, seems a lot of others agree (as per the poll)

Poll must be right then. From where I was sitting I thought he was shite and plenty agree with me. That's what makes it such a great game. Some correctly agree with me and others like yourself who are completely wrong think he did well or ok :)

And after his display at Stoke I expected big things of Christian. Looking worringly like a flat track bully atm.

Good summary apart from your thoughts on Alli which we’ll agree to disagree on

Toby was OK defensively but he needs to cut out some of th Hollywood raking passes. A lot were too straight and easily conceded possession.

Just one question. How the fuck did Eriksen manage to stay on the pitch for 90?

Because unfortunately we've assembled a squad where he has no completion for his place.

Alli MOM. Even though he missed a couple of half chances he was the only player in the first half who didn't shit his pants on the occasion. Was even better in the second half when he was pushed up following Dembele's return. Having said that he didn't have much competition as other than Toby and Walker the rest of the players were below par in what was a pretty shite performance all round. Very poor defending and a complete lack of quality in the final third where it counts.

I've been a Spurs fan long enough so I shouldn't have expected anything different, but I'm afraid when it came down to the big occasion we failed to live up to it. From Son's awful first touch when in acres of space in the penalty area, to Eriksen's inability to execute the type of passes a supposed top class No.10 should, to Lamela working hard but flattering to deceive with the ball, to the amateur defending by Verts and Davies (twice!) and to Kane looking fucked and completely lacking confidence.

You can get away with it against Stoke, but in the CL you can't. Very disappointing and I thought Poch also made an error by leaving it too late to bring Sissoko on when we were crying out for some pace to stretch them.

Still, I had a cracking view of Monaco's goals and Spurs losing.

General lack of pace, guile and craft in the final third and incentive passing and control from midfield.

It's been my theme for a while, but Im sticking with it.

We are still lacking in one or two positions.

Alli as MoM?!?!
He was poor. Tried to do way too much himself. Best thing he did was the run down the left flank once Lamela had gone off.
Mind you, that was more than Lamela did all night (assist aside).

There really is no pace in the team, and on a pitch that size we suffered for it. Our passing was tentative not zippy and precise. Two or three looked sluggish and low on confidence. Kane was far too isolated during the first half. And the age old problem of poor delivery was there for all to see. At least Janssen looked lively when he came on, and showed some much needed aggression.

I thought Dembele was head and shoulders above anyone on the pitch when introduced and hopefully we don't start without him again. We look so easy to beat without him in the side.

I think the hype the hope and the expectations not realised are colouring peoples views.
Monaco are top of the League, beat PSG recently and are clearly no pushovers.
To say otherwise is to fatally disrepect our opponents.
They have some strong players ,some quick players and some quick strong players.
They had done their homework and stuck to their plan.
They got lucky but we helped them.
Widley varying grades reflect all this.

Played well......... Toby, Walker and Deli (unlucky not to score twice)
Played OK...........Dembele, Janssen, and Son apart from the miss and Lamela
Could do better, much better probably....Dier,Jan, Eriksen, Davies,Kane(Should have scored)

Didn't do enough to grade.....Lloris, Sissoko.

They had two chances gifted by us and scored twice.
From above we had at least three chances and on another day
might have won which on our second half performance we possibly deserved.
But as Mick Jagger sang
You don't always get what you want,
but you might get what you need.
Hope this inspires us to greater effort and concentration.

Exactly, when we actually passed the ball with pace and intent, for the first 5 and last 5 mins of the half we looked great.

Players let themselves down last night which is a shame as we are the better team when we want to be

That's the least of our defensive worry... A greater concern is Vertonghen, how do you feel about him?
