Tottenham asked to double £2m offer to complete signing of Pau Lopez from Espanyol
  • Under 21 Spanish international has spent the 2016-2017 season on loan at White Hart Lane.
  • Spurs don't want to pay more than £2m as he will be out of contract in the summer of 2018
Espanyol have demanded Tottenham Hotspur pay £4m to make Pau Lopez's loan move permanent ahead of the 2017-2018 campaign, IBTimes UK sources understand. However, the deal is currently far off as Spurs are only offering half of that fee - and look reluctant to match the demands of the La Liga side.

Lopez, 22, moved to White Hart Larne during the last summer transfer window after Tottenham agreed to pay around £500,000 for getting him on loan during the 2016-17 season, with an option to make the move permanent for £6.1m at the end of the campaign.

But Spurs are trying to get a cut-price deal as the Under 21 Spanish international only has 12 months remaining in his contract at Espanyol.

Tottenham have already had their first £2m offer rejected, as IBTimes UK understands that the La Liga side are demanding at least double to part ways with the keeper.

Spurs would be open to give the Catalans a percentage share of any future sale but don't plan to increase their bid as they know that they will be able to sign him as a free-agent in the coming summer transfer window.

Yet in this case, Pau will be able to negotiate a free-transfer to Tottenham from January 2018 unless the Catalas tie him to a new deal.

Lopez has failed to play a single game for the Tottenham first-team during his loan spell due to the presence of Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm.

However, Mauricio Pochettino is still keen on making his services permanent. The Argentine boss knows him well since their early days together at Espanyol, and he sees the Spaniard as the Tottenham number one in the long-term.

Indeed, the Argentinian turned down an approach from Osasuna to lure him back to La Liga during the January transfer window because he wanted Pau to continue his development under goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez at the Tottenham training ground.

So, we agreed to pay a certain amount (£6m). Instead, we've offered a third of what we agreed. Espanyol recognise they won't get what we agreed, but want us to double our offer to two-thirds of what we agreed. We don't want to double our offer, but, if we met them half way, we'd end up paying half of what we originally agreed. And if they don't accept our offer, we'll get him for free next year. From which one can deduce that the nearer we get to 31 August without a deal, the more likely it is that his price will start to go down, not up, as Espanyol start to realise they might lose their player for nothing.

Frankly, this negotiation couldn't be more Levy-like if it tried.

I'd love to watch Levy do his weekly food shopping. I bet he finds everything that's about to pass its sell by date and enters into negotiations with the check out girl.

"I'll leave the tin of beans for now but I'll come back at midnight tomorrow and give you 15p"

"But Mr Levy, Jurgen Klopp was in earlier and said he'd pay 25p"

"OK I'll give you 15p now and another 11p if they perform well on my toast later"

"Please fuck off to customer services, there are people waiting to be served"

Pau Lopez is the 3rd GK. It's not as he's desperate to move to us. He can easily renew his contract with Espanyol and stay there, or move elsewhere

I think Vorm will move on this summer, Lopez to step up to second choice.

I hope Vorm stays, for our back-up keeper I don't think we could do better and I don't feel nervous if he has to step in as proven Premiership and international quality.

Is a tricky one on how to give Lopez more game time though (if we keep him for next season).

Vorm would start for most sides in the Prem, but him and Pau will be competing for the 2nd choice next season

As someone above mentioned he was one of the top young keepers in the world last season & had a call up to the Spain senior squad I believe too, if Poch wants him hope we get the transfer done

Tottenham offer €2m to buy on-loan goalkeeper Pau López from Espanyol
• Spain under-21 goalkeeper was on loan at Spurs last season
• Offer includes up to €2m in future bonuses and a cut of any future sale

Tottenham Hotspur have moved to turn Pau López’s season-long loan into a permanent deal and have offered Espanyol €2m (£1.74m) plus a further €2m in add-ons. The proposal includes a clause that would guarantee the Spanish club a cut of any future sale and Tottenham are confident it will be accepted.

Pau, who will play for Spain at the European Under-21 Championship in Poland later this month, did not feature for Tottenham during the season but he is highly rated by the manager, Mauricio Pochettino.

The 22-year-old has one year to run on his Espanyol contract and, as he is not inclined to sign a new one, Tottenham believe that they are in a strong negotiating position. The London club had the option to buy Pau outright last January for €7m (£6.08m) but they passed it up, largely because they felt that they could get him for less.

I was under the impression he was about 38 years old which gives an indication of how many drugs I was on during last summer's transfer window.

Seems like Pau wants to play with Poch long term and is willing to collect a wage packet and work with our coaches until Hugo and Vorm move on. Pau will probably get a senior debut if we get a fourth tier matchup in the league cup this year or some such.
