Losing 3 wickets for 4 runs in 2.5 overs. Poor from England, having the same problems from the warm-up matches. We'll be lucky to reach 300.

Aussie patience really paid off here. They invited the pull, and found Malan's top edge, and they stuck with Lyon, whose numerous dangerous deliveries eventually nabbed a couple. Commentators were calling for a change in tactics, but Smith deserves credit for persevering with the game plan.

Well done to Broad. Had to get aggressive. Have to give the session to us though. Games still pretty even. Lets see how we bat, and England bowl.

The Steve Smith song to the tune of the Beatles song I get by with a little help from my friends :D

What should I do
Should I use a review
Can you stand up and signal to me
Tell what you’ve seen
On the replay machine
Am I out am I in
Can you see
Oh and I cheat with a little help from my friends
Oh and I cheat with a little help from my friends

Frustrating, but typical. There was nothing happening at all when Malan got out. Lyon was getting a bit of turn, but the quick's were running out of ideas and all Malan had to do was keep his concentration. When Ali went I was off to bed knowing we would barely get past 300 and so it proved to be.

We did better than I expected with their top order to be fair, but Australia won't do the same as us now they have steadied the ship a bit and that's the difference. I expect them to have a lead of 50 odd. Obviously a couple of early wickets tomorrow changes things, but I don't see it.

The most worrying thing for me is that even on a comparatively benign pitch by Australian standards we've lost the last five wickets for 50 runs.

Have to say well done to Joe Root. Captained very well in the field, placed his fielders well and was backed up by the bowlers.

Fuck that hurt.

Tomorrow should decide the result. Great fightback from Smith. He always looks a bit loose and vulnerable, but he must have a great eye and temperament. If he stays in for another 3 hours tomorrow he could take the game beyond England.

Looks like its going to be a good series anyway, and hope Stokes makes it eventually.

That's not really true. Lyon was beating the edge repeatedly, giving up very few runs from his end, and the seamers were sticking to a plan of short stuff, even though they were getting hooked and pulled. At a point in time, both tactics came off and wickets fell. That's really not "nothing happening". It's sticking to a plan till it works.

Fair enough they stuck to a plan, but at no point did either batsmen look uncomfortable with any of the short stuff. Malan gave his wicket away through a mixture of inexperience and poor judgement imo, rather than as a result of being worked over by a good spell of short bowling.

Sort of. But as Graeme Swann said on comms, none of Lyon's deliveries in the first hour would have hit the stumps. He bowled a lot of "for the camera" balls, but no batsman in their right mind is going to get anywhere near them. The first one that didn't turn a lot got Ali in trouble, but that was about 20 overs in, not really a tactic, or if it was, it wasn't a very good one.
