The bench pisses me off. Why do we have 1 GK + 3 defenders? Put Edwards, Shashoua or Sterling on the bench ffs even Nkoudou would do.
Because Pochettino. That's why. I expect he'll have 4 defenders on the bench when Wanyama and Toby get back.

I don't like people keep underestimating Burnley (especially away). It would be completely suicide if we pair eriksen or alli with Dier as CM2 in 4231

Burnley...ffs...

If we can't pick eleven players to pick this side apart then we really are in a desperate state of affairs.

Respect yes, but a club of our stature we should all expect.

Hindsight is always a wonderful thing and I'm sure Poch will be criticised for the lineup if we lose. But I can see his logic here.

Dembele will not be able to play both Xmas matches so reserve him for the home game where we are likely to have to break down a deep-lying defensive unit. His ability to drift past players is more likely to make the difference on Tuesday against Southampton. And in a physical game against Burnley Sissoko's drive is more likely to be effective. Winks is obviously less suited to physical sides – assuming his non-appearance is tactical rather than anything else.

Of course, if we lose, people will look at the selection and have a go at Poch. But that would be unfair; it's close to our strongest lineup* minus three players, two of whom are injured (Alderweireld, Wanyama and Dembele).

*I don't think there's any meaningful difference in quality between all 4 full-backs, who each better suit difference opposition.

...Winks ill/injured or (rightly) dropped?
COYS
If he's dropped Winks without it being a forced change then Poch is a fucking idiot. You'd at the very least want him as a bench option. There must be something wrong which is a worry. Could be one of those setbacks that the club keeps hush hush about and before you know it the season's over.

Sissoko won't be playing CM he'll be playing in that weird right hand sided CM with Dier on his own in middle. What does Sissoko do in that position that Lamela couldn't?
Every time Aurier starts so does Sissoko, maybe it's in a contract.

Citeh with another four, just what the rest of the PL teams are playing for is beyond me.

They could wrap the PL title up in a record time.

Amazing.

Pretty obvious it's just a CL battle now, and with the way United are playing that could leave a 4 way battle for the last two spots.

Maybe we will play a 3 - 5 - 2 with Dier in defence and Son and Kane up top?

EDIT: This selection does give us different option in terms of formation.

Sorry but Burnley are currently above us, and their record at home and against Top6 teams (Win Chelsea, draw against us and liverpool, narrowly losing to arsenal - I watched that game and Burnley almost won it) are really good. They are not (currently) a ffs team

Better know as the inverted lumberjack position.

I think its just that they have a relationship so Poch is convinced it could translate to something on the pitch when everytime he's proven wrong.
