A young British Grealish is fine as a squad filler at this point. French 25-year olds with iffy injury records aren't.

I trust Poch. If Poch signs off on Plea in the belief that he'll be valuable depth then I am 100% okay with this signing.

It's not just what we've been told, it's clear looking at our projected income (CL income, constantly improving sponsor income and the big jump in matchday coming) that we are catching up with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea financially. Harry's bumper new deal only adds to that belief.

Look at what Liverpool are doing now. Salah was a bit of a punt but still much closer to Martial level than Plea in terms of stature in the game. Firmino, Keita, Fabinho, all statement signings in the £40-50m bracket that most top clubs would have loved. Even Arsenal bought one of the top strikers in Germany a few months back.

We did make a big bold move with Davinson, that was big money on a huge prospect. When Poch said he wanted backing to go for the big prizes I assumed more along those lines.

we were told we were in for:
Sessegnon, unfortunately they where promoted

we were told we were in for:
de Ligt but Ajax now want a lot more

we were told we were in for:
Martial but 1, Man U don't want to sell to us, and have increased the fee

we have just been told we were in for:
Pulsic, but by sounds of it the release clause we thought to be close to £50m turns out to be £70m+

if these where our main targets before hand, what do you really expect us to do? we don't have a bottomless pit, and can't force teams to sell at the prices we expected. just because a lot of people on here now don't believe Poch is being backed as promised, Poch also knows we can't be stupid. we aren't talking about 2-3m extra per target, we are talking 10-30m.

we also won't know exactly how much the new stadium will bring in yet. the club hope the facilities will be a success, yet most of the post in the season ticket thread are so disappointed with the cost of the season ticket prices, they are talking about boycotting using the facilities. if 75% of the other season ticket holders that don't post on SC go down that route, then we might struggle to hit the heights many expect.

we was told we had £150m to spend at the start and most probably end up with a nett of 30-50 after sales, well because our main targets have been priced out now, I expect we will get the players that are not plan A or even plan B, and most probably end making a profit again after sales.

yes will be great if we can get a marque signing, but from what I understand that might of been Martial. think we will just have to wait and see how it goes, but unfortunately at the moment we can't compete with Liverpool because it sounds like the goal post have been moved on all targets

I personally have no issue trusting him to sign whoever he wants - I just get annoyed when we sign players and don't give them any time on the pitch.

Fair points. Let's see where we end up at the end of the window. It's not really got started yet.

Sometimes goalposts move back into our favour.

I get we may have to sign plan C-Ds like Plea as in the past. I'm just not keen on wrapping them up early when better opportunites will still arise. That's more my issue than us not paying £20m over our valuation for the sake of it.

I like how we have competed on a budget, but now feels like a crossroads to me. If financials haven't improved significantly, how are we managing huge rises for Poch and Kane and the other contract renewals on the cards?

Fair point on facilities, but the price hikes have probably already covered the loss af a few beers and burgers (although they'd still appreciate the revenue I'm sure). It's not like they boycotted the tickets.

at the end of the day, I would expect Poch to want players that are team players. a lot of the posters disappointed with the links of players like Plea and Grealish want the "I" players. As @Lilbaz said, yes Wet Spam are after him, sometimes they pick up gems Payet, Lanzini.

the worrying thing with Plea is his injury record, well if he has any signs of dodgy knees still he won't get past a medical.

we also have to take into account that if Martial is a No,No, perhaps the better players that are in that 60m bracket, just aren't for sale.

This is what I would do:

1. Lets assume the original budget was for 4-5 players.

2. Instead of chasing 4-5 players of lesser quality - but at the budgeted price, I would target 3-4 players at the same budget (i.e. pay more per player), and commit to make up depth with Academy players.

I think this approach improves us as a squad more than filling the 4-5 spots with adequate, but not stellar, players - and breaths some life back into the dreams of the academy players.

Using Onomah as a 5th CM, or CCV as a 5th CB should not have much impact on the overall team, but would free up money to improve the top-18 players...

Plea, not sure, his injuries will put some off, and he's probably only had one outstanding season, but he does fit the type of WF/CF we appear to be looking at to replace Llorente as Kane's understudy (like Martial).
Ultimately, as an example, Aubameyang went to Borussia at a similar age to Plea now, with a comparable goals record over his two seasons as Plea has over the last two seasons, so maybe don't write him off just yet.

our wages have increased, and getting more in line with Liverpool and Arsenal (except Ozil), but we are not in a position to have a squad that has players earning 150k + sitting on the bench. we will always have trouble finding a back up to Lloris, Jan, Sanchez to an extent, even Toby if he stays. also the case for Eriksen and Dele. the difference with the Manchester clubs is they have the money to fund a 25 man squad, the trouble they have is keeping them all happy, but City can get away with it due to the wages they can pay through out

Sissoko played in 47 matches last season, I think we can find minutes for quality players.

but would he of played so much if Dembele, Winks and even Wanyama been fully fit?

going back to your original post, I agree with youth, but youth can be plus additions to the 25 I believe, and yes would be great to filter them in, but sometimes the op your playing when someone important is injured, needs that little bit more experience.

edit: also the ones wanting us to sign the "I" players, is because they want to win every single trophy going, the minute we play youth players in the CoC and lose, it's "we don't take the cup serious"!

Not to mention no Lucas and Lamela being hurt. Sissoko played very little when people were fit between January and April.

Problem here is, if you have 25 plus promising youth players, how do you find them the minutes required to progress their development? If the young players aren't getting the playing time to gain experience, will they just end up going elsewhere?

got a feeling that with the new stadium is putting pressure in a sense that we need to get that 1st trophy in it quick. perhaps we will see a few involved/benched against lower teams, but if we come up against a prem or even championship team that's flying we will use them towards the end if in a position to do so.

Upto now I've been a bit anti-Plea, simply based on fact i dont know who the fuck he is and feel we have the stature where we should be buying more 'known' players! However if it is same scouting team and process that got us Alli and Sanchez I'll shut the fuck up!

Plus we failed early in the league cup and need more quality rotation options in the league and champions league. All the other top teams will strengthen and a high percentage of our first 11 have had a hard summer in Russia... So will need to me managed fitness wise...

Not so much Alli, as that was Pleat I believe, but Steve Hitchen "replaced" Paul Mitchell before last summer and is supposed to be a bit of an SME on French football, and was also the one who originally scouted Suarez (before he left to become a scout for Liverpool, and the rest is history)...

However, he's also the same scout that brought in Aurier, technically, so....

Patience my young padawan. Aurier has had one season in a new country, it's unreasonable to expect someone in his situation to get settled and start playing his best football so quickly. Lamela is the perfect example.
Let's see how Aurier does this upcoming season, I'm not saying he's guaranteed to come good but it's a waste to write him off so soon after he joined.
