My point is that we probably have to sell before we buy.

totally agree, and even more urgency to start buying HG eventually. not sure when and even what comp, but the HG quota is increasing soon (not the Brexit chat)

He's really determined to overlook the part where Poch simply didn't want to buy an injured player. I keep harping on the fact that it was a Grade 3 Hamstring tear, hoping to express the severity of that type of injury and why it wouldn't have been a good deal for us.

There was also the situation where we had no idea how well Winks would come back from a long lay off, and the continuing management of Dembele's injuries. Good decision not to take a punt on a badly injured Barkley and go for Moura instead IMO.

Where is £22m coming from? The transfer fee of Barkley was £15m and the transfer fee of Moura was closer to £25m I believe than the £23m claimed in the article. Even at £23m that's still a decent gap.

But beyond that, I can't really see what you're saying. If Poch said that he didn't want to buy Barkley but would prefer Moura and then the chairman went and did that, how is that a bad thing? This isn't a case of Poch having to pick one of the two, but rather saying he didn't want Barkley at that time.

Remember that real life managers don't deal with football like people do in video games or on the Internet. They are turning up at the training ground every day in order to get their available players ready to face the upcoming opponents. If Poch decides that Barkley wasn't going to be helpful to his every day plans then it's fine for him to not want him added. It's not just about a transfer budget and trying to buy as much as possible within that budget.

Incidentally, I would have been in favour of signing Barkley even when he was injured. And with a transfer fee of just £15m for an English player in the current market it would have had to have been a pretty mega injury to make his value drop below that. Perhaps there is some comfort in that - Levy didn't take the profit option and instead bought what he was asked for.
7mil in agent fees for Barkley. I remember Poch saying something along the lines of "I think it was 23mil" in his post match press conference after ManU regarding Lucas.

I believe that Poch wanted both but prioritized Lucas over Barkley due to his injury. My whole original argument was to the guy that was doing the whole "ha see it wasn't Levys fault". Poch wanted Barkley in the summer, and in the winter but he picked Lucas instead. In my view of we should back the manager, we should have added both especially considering our midfield need and HG quota requirements. We wouldn't have turned into Leeds because of signing Ross Barkley.

I'm a fan of levy, think he has done a great job with the resources and remit he has been given.

I also would like new owners or investment. I am tired of doing things on a shoe string. Not wanting an oil company just someone that can pay for the stadium and see us on more a level playing field to the other teams.

Until then we are only going to buy players with the money we gain from sales. Unless this window we get bids for the players we don't want nothing will happen, just as the summer.

It is the unfortunate, frustrating reality.

But baz taking that into consideration doesn't that help make my point a little more understandable? Poch picked Lucas over Barkley, he didn't just decide I don't want Barkley anymore...

nope I believe him and Foyth had to be left out of CL because we fell short on HG. I think our CL squad is only 23 players (on that list it's only 22)

having more hg players doesn't allow us to register more non-hg, we just simply have too many of the latter and are over the limit.

I just saw article on HITC ( I know, I apologize) that brought West Ham needing to get a healthy CF in for January. The article mentioned Llorente and I immediately thought that would be a good deal if we were to swap + cash Llorente for Declan Rice in January.

I think Rabiot is headed to Barca in the summer, so they definitely don't need to fight with Man City for De Jong. Wonder what this all means for us regarding N'dombele.

Holy crap - 7m in agent fees on a 15m player. We can all agree that's immensely fucked up!!

Something I find tough here is that you have said the original post was talking about the missed transfer not being Levy's fault, but you have instantly turned round and said Levy didn't back Poch because he didn't sign him. You're saying it is Levy's fault. That article (and let's be honest it's only football.london) states reasons beyond Levy that it didn't happen but you have blamed Levy for it. It's such a boring thing to hear over and over.

In amongst all this there's actually a pretty interesting point about the impact Barkley may have had if we signed him during that Summer of 2017. We certainly didn't have a "need" for him back then - he probably would have been seen as a long-term replacement for Dembele or as competition to Lamela/Son.

At £35m I think there would have been value in the transfer in terms of the fee, but if he was angling for more than 120k per week that would have made him easily our highest earner. Is there much value for us as a team in the context of the squad we had at the time? Would people have been happy about us blocking the path of Winks? Would people be happy that our highest earner was a player with so little experience?

So it's very easy to look at transfers with hindsight and say that Levy should be spending more money etc. but in reality the transfers should be judged in context.

But manager's at clubs like Madrid,Barcelona, bayern and city/Utd etc have this all the time it's part of being successful then we need to do and have the same where possible along with academy products if theyare good enough.
If we as a club are to be successful then the manager needs a better depth of squad along with managing players and their and the club's expectations it's part for the course.

Actually if you look at city Barca Madrid their squads are actually quite small. They tend to have 18 real quality players and the rest is made up of kids and a few lesser players. Just don’t think it’s possible to keep 25 top quality players happy. It’s also slight Madness having someone even on 80k if they aren’t even making your matchday squad it’s a very fine balance.

Quick check I’d say city and Barca have about 19 quality players. And I did include Delph and Danilo in that who are a bit borderline.

It likely means that we'll be quoted 50mil and not get him.
I reckon Lyon will want to keep hold of Ndombele for CL at the least, so summer seems more realistic for attempting to sign him.

Which leaves Barella, Barrios, and Berge. Possibly Haidara. Possibly Rice. (Diawara probably going to Wolves with Mendes involved). Lobotka being eyed to replace Diawara.

Don't write us off just yet. We are becoming a different animal with the stadium and development players. DeLigt imo doesn't make sense now we know Foyth imo is the real deal. De Jong you could say Winks has come through personally I'd go hard for Grealish

SPORT reporting that Rabiot is being offered to us and juve for just 10 million euros as PSG are doing everything possible to keep him away from Barca. Also saying that Barca is lining up Ndombele as an alternative.

At 10m euros, rabiot is an absolute no brainer. As soon as he signs for us, that price quadruples. Not to mention he's also quite good at football.

EDIT: I'm not good at the whole Spanish thing, so I can't find if it's their own info or not. They're presenting it as if it is tho
