Has to be a Liverpool loss. They haven't lost yet this season and we need them to drop as many points as possible in order to try and catch them.

Not only that but I think if Liverpool walked away with a draw....how much more confidence would that give them? The toughest game they have left this season in terms of pressure, being away, playing the supposed only challenger. Would just allow them kick on further imo. Who cares if we drop to 3rd? 2nd/3rd it doesn't matter at the minute.

I don't think Liverpool will lose tonight and if they win it's almost theirs.

I’m really not buying this if Liverpool win it’s done stuff. There’s 17 games left that’s a lot of games. Everyone had written Man U off for top 4 and now they are probably my favs over Arsenal and Chelsea. Would only take a couple of draws in there next 7 and gap could be 5 or 6 pts with 10 to play.

IMO we're not playing for the title and won't be at any point this season, nor were we before Wolves.I don't want Liverpool to win the league but we're not catching them, whereas we're above City.
Reluctantly, I vote for Lolerpool to win this match and us to battle City for 2nd this season.

In our circumstances, finishing 2nd must feel like winning the league any way. I was convinced we'd be nowhere near the top 4.

Not convinced we can go that extra mile and win the title but want us to have a chance.

So want a City win tonight.

Don't think it will be anywhere near as straightforward as you're making out.
Of course not. It’s still a very good City team, and they are at home. Liverpool just so confident at the moment and not conceding, not even conceding many chances. My money would be on them if I had any left after Xmas.

Thing is, we stay 6 points off the top but we have to take more points than 2 teams to win it, which is hard when they're as good as those 2.

Naaa, Think you overthunk this one...

If City wins tonight and Liverpool are 6 points ahead with City 2 points ahead - It will take a massive effort from us to overturn the 6 point gap.

If we somehow do that, City will by all likelihood be overtaken by us along the way...

There is also another aspect to consider; If there is no competition for the first to places we might risk Liv/City to rest players when playing Arse and Chelsea as well....

Yes we know but there was a similar gap between us and Leicester and Chelsea in respective seasons and on each occasion we was unable to close the gap so why would now be any different.

City win definitely. Unfortunately I just can't see Liverpool losing though. They look immense in all areas of the pitch. City are all over the place at the back.

You can ignore what I said and reply to a non-existent comment if you like but it’s probably best to post a stand-alone comment if you are going to do that.

I didn’t discuss all Liverpool’s spending just how they dealt with the proceeds of selling Coutinho. In that instance they bought Keita, VdV and then added cash to get Alison and Fabinho. Even if Fabinho hasn’t set the world alight I wouldn’t call any of that dross and it is in stark contrast to our transfer approach. If we sold Eriksen for a similar sum to Countinho does anyone believe we would buy 2 players for £65m each ? Of course not we would have all kinds of excuses about agent fees, wages and the zodiac. How is our supposed lower risk strategy of buying £10-15m punts who we can sell at a small loss if they don’t work out panning out for us ? Well GKN and Janssen would suggest not very well.

For the record as I’ve said many times before this isn’t a request to splash cash but to take some intelligent risk. If we can’t compete with Liverpool and others in top end transfers than let’s do a Dortmund and try to stock our academy with the best youth available but we don’t even spend money there. We prefer to spend on real estate than playing squad. You can neg rep me in every thread I don’t give a monkeys.
Any evidence to back up this assumption? I remember spunking two-thirds of the Bale money on two players at about £30m each - rather a lot at the time. We also used the Berbatov and Keane money to make 3 big, (expensive at the time) signings. We spent most of the Carrick money on his "replacement" (Zokora). So I would say that every time we've sold a key player we've used the money in much the way you describe.

Of course you can make our "low risk punts" look poor when you choose the ones that haven't worked out. But what about Trippier, Wanyama, Foyth, Dier, Wimmer (for example)? What were (e.g.) Son and Sánchez if not intelligent risk? And God knows what £30m on Sissoko qualifies as...!

Henry/Fenway, especially in recent times, have followed a very similar model at Liverpool to what Levy/ENIC have done here, i.e. reinvesting any and all funds generated by the football club into the football club. It's just Liverpool generate rather a lot more money in the first place - something the new stadium, as I'm sure you're aware, is designed to help with (the real gap over the last few years has been in commercial revenue, something they will most likely always have an advantage in, but our stadium should be able to generate a lot more than theirs simply by virtue of the fact that it has better facilities and is in London).

I don't expect Levy to change the way he operates in the transfer market once the stadium debt is fully refinanced and the beans have stopped jumping around so he can actually count them. But then I don't believe he's ever had any issue paying substantial fees for players anyway. What I'm certain has been a problem in the past is wages but, should he revert to the 55% wages to turnover level he was maintaining before the new TV money/stadium build, then that won't be much of a problem anymore either.

I’m really not buying this if Liverpool win it’s done stuff. There’s 17 games left that’s a lot of games. I seem to recall Man City reeling teams in from a long way back at least twice in the past. United in the Aguerooooo season and Liverpool in the Slippy G one?

Really believe a Liverpool win will give them one hand on the title. They'll have such a big cushion the pressure will be off. Even a draw leaves them 7 clear, which allows 2-3 slip ups even if City finish with a record 17 straight wins.

I personally don't think we'll compete, but really to have any chance we need both of them to get in a dog fight and keep the pressure on each other.

Regardless of us I'd hate Liverpool to win it as the media and their fans would insufferable, even though I respect what FSG and Klopp have done.

So yeah, City win please Pep.

It's an interesting point. Like you, I don't think we're quite there as title contenders either but had previously liked the idea of City winning above Liverpool. If City beat them tonight it certainly becomes harder for us to finish ahead of City. And surely Liverpool are going to have a poor league run at some stage...?

Where did you think Spurs were going to finish at the start of the season?

I'm hoping for a draw tonight, can't see Liverpool maintaining their current run for the whole season. They're a confidence team and will drop their levels at some point in the season when focus slips or pressure gets too high (only halfway through the season so no need for all the hysteria and panic) whereas City are just high quality throughout their whole squad.

As much as I'd love to say that we're still in the fight I can't see us keeping pace with both (that Wolves game really hit my confidence in our challenge)

With Toby - 5th/6th without - god knows.
They've proven me wrong so far though, which is great.
