The thing with Wan Bissaka is that he's a superb defender. We got very little change out of him all evening. 1 on 1 he relishes the duel and the challenge and usually comes out on top. The problem with his game from what I see is that he's not done anything going forward.
Spurs tend to sacrifice some defensive quality to allow for ability to get forward and contribute to the attack when we target FB's. AWB is looking a bit like Ashley Cole to me at the moment in that he is superb defensively but lacking in attack. Cole couldn't cross a ball to save his life, it drove me crazy when watching him play for England. In fairness though, it didn't stop him being considered one of the best LB's to play the game and at this point I would happily take a rock solid defender with potential to improve in attack than the opposite. Finding a player with a perfect balance of the two is very rare and ultimately expensive.
Some have mentioned Youcef Atal from Nice but he seems like the flip of AWB to me. To read up on him makes him sound a lot like Serge Aurier in that he takes a lot risks defensively and I think Aurier has had to adapt that part of him game here. He's far less of a gambler in the tackle than he used to be.
As I say, I like what I see from AWB and if we want to target an RB in the summer then he'd be the guy I'd go for. Young, english and already a great defender with room for improvement going forward. That's a real solid base to work from for Pochettino - the fullback whisperer.
