I enjoy your post immensely but have to differ with you on whether his legacy has been damaged. It clearly has been damaged and the question is is how much of it can be recovered. He is a phenomenal player and we were lucky to have him as part of our team.
The question is how much of it can be recovered. Personally I think he can still do things which bring people back into his corner but I would also think a sizable percentage of individuals will never hold him in the esteem they used to.
I would also agree that he will continue to produce at levels that few can replicate in the league because of his ambition and drive. But legacy is a function of the observer more than it is of the player.
Appreciate that. Agree with you, he is a phenomenal, maybe even generational English player.
I just don't see it that way on the legacy side of things. Modric, Bale, Berbatov, Carrick, Gazza, Klinsmann, Hoddle, Sherringham - the names go on. Fact is, they have a legacy within, and without, Spurs. How many have unstained legacies? What is his crime? Wanting to win things? Hard for me to be pissed at that. I expect that every season from Spurs and remain disappointed so often. I refuse to blame the player for stuff his management team does. If he stays, he will put his head down and get the job done. He will know, window is closed (both transfer window and this opportunity). He is on 7 consecutive years of most goals for Spurs. He is second only to Henry in Golden Boots.
A person's legacy is their context in history. It is not a moment in time. Some feel he is being disloyal. Most will come around. Some will be forever spurned. All fair. I believe, in the context of history, his legacy is already there. Whether it gets to the point of EPL legend, Spurs legend or England legend, is still to be determined.
Leighton Baines has both his legacy with Everton and Wigan. He is also an Everton Legend
We fans have the luxury of new aspirations, goals, dreams every season. We get a restart every year. Whether 15 or 55. Players have but one career. I will not begrudge any player wanting to win things elsewhere when they have given everything to the club while they were there. Kane, when compared to any other Spurs player, can hold his head up high. Legacy is safe.
Personally, I would love to see him stay and become a legend, top PL and Spurs scorer of all time.
