So the government have got to seize the asset, get it through the lawyers despite the sanctions and sell the club. It won’t be done quickly, how can it? His assets have only been seized, it’s a bit early to think they can be sold off.

Any chat about them being sold quickly is massively jumping the gun.
Yes, I would say the situation is more complicated now for sure

I'm laughing at this news obviously. But in all seriousness this should have happened years ago. The UK government have been allowing corrupt Russian money to harbour in the UK for years (So long as they get their cut from it), and not only that, turn a profit from it. Land/Property banking being a perfect example.

Things to consider about the sale of the club from earlier in this thread though - the club are in debt to him for a "fuck ton" (technical term, look it up) of cash. He's made no mention of being prepared to write that off, so who in their right mind will buy a club with that much luggage, that Roman bought for £1?

Not sure him not being able to sell is a good thing for us and the rest of the pl.
Short term its an issue but once things get back to normal is he just gonna carry on now?
Not sure how this works.

When the conflict ends it’s still unlikely Putin is removed in the short to medium term imo.

In which case Russia and the oligarchs will remain under various degrees of sanction for years.

There will be somewhat of a cleansing of Russian money and influence in pets of Londongrad as national security warnings are finally taken more seriously. At least in the most visible cases such as Chelsea.

I expect the Government will sell the club in the summer and freeze the proceeds for a period of time.

They won’t want to damage a British institution, the optics of Russia’s influence and control of London would be terrible, as would the politics.

He’s already pledged that proceeds of the sale would go to a charity foundation he’d set up. But let’s be honest, that would’ve likely been a front and he could’ve controlled where that money was allocated. If he were to sell under a government licence he would have no control over where that money goes and to who.
To all victims of the Ukrainian war - which sounds like a great way to pay compensation to the families of Russian conscripts lost, etc.

Shame this didn't happen a year ago then I think the Newcastle take-over would have been placed under more serious consideration.

Indeed and I agree with you, but only now has he been implicated to supplying goods and materials enabling an illegal invasion of a sovereign state.

He has said he will write it off.

He hasn't clarified if the money he would have got from the sale will be used to recoup his loans but that's seperate from Chelsea's own funds anyway.

It could be the plan was to sell for (say) £2.5b, take his £1.5b from that and then gives the rest ("net proceeds") to "victims".

Or he could have meant net proceeds to be anything after taxes and and legal costs. Who knows. It was ambiguous.

Either way it wouldn't have been taken from Chelsea itself.

Perhaps these sanctions will mean he needs the money more than he did when he said he didn't want the loans back

They're not allowed to put that money to use though are they? As far as i'm aware.
I'm sure they will still be entitled to broadcast revenue, otherwise they could just shut off all the cameras. To demonstrate how broadcast deals are the lion share of their revenue here's their turnover the last couple years...

Would be great if they could sanction the broadcast revenue, and also for more of the sponsors "commercial" to pull out

As others have mentioned, this probably will not stop the sale of the club - just that Roman cannot profit from the sale. Short term it will be awkward but no doubt the government will facilitate the sale to someone else as they see the club as an cultural asset - no way would they let it 'go bust'

I really hope whoever is playing Chelsea next gets their fans to wave fake £10 notes at Chelsea!

Will be very interesting to see what happens with broadcast revenue in that case. The question is whether they would be able to fulfil existing staff contracts with it.

If they have sanctioned it though then technically they could just turn off the cameras and have only skeleton match reporting? Doesn't seem impossible.

So can we now expect in view of this "uncertainty" to see Tuchel leave at the end of the season to be the new boss of Man United ?

More likely Poch will go there. Leonardo's just said "Pochettino is still part of the project for this season. It's not the time to think about that.", which will be a death knell for him at PSG.

Doesn't matter. They will never get an owner that was willing to do what Abramovic was doing financially. It's 100% going to hurt them compared to what they had and that's a bonus.
