I would like to think that the investigation into the club will also encompass a money laundering aspect into the source of his funds, as that will open a whole new set of problems for any sale.

I wonder how many decades it would take for our govt to organise a tender process for selling a football club?(y)
Truss was going on about how they were desperate to protect football club as they are "cultural asset" so I don't think they'll allow Chelsea to completely rot and fester - wouldn't be at all surprised if they fast track this type of thing - but equally it's bound to be complicated AF so surely it would take a good while to push through, right?

@Trix football clubs usually have the option to tear up contracts when there is gross misconduct/criminality (I think). Does anything exist in the opposite direction - I.e. could a player rip up their contract and leave as a free agent if their club was frozen?

Not long I'd imagine. Nick Candy has already declared an interest, is a Tory party donor, and was at one of the downing street lockdown parties. He probably had his bid accepted prior to the sanctions.

I doubt it. Every contract is different and the player can ask for any stipulations to be put in that they like. Someone like Ronaldo might well do that as their own image rights are a bigger deal than the what the club pays them, but I wouldn't imagine any of the Chelsea players would have something like that in their contracts.

Now as soon as they don't get paid that's a different story as Chelsea will be breaking contractual conditions, and as things stand Chelsea only have what is in the bank as right now to do so for the foreseeable future.

Considering Chelsea can’t pay a lawyer to defend themselves, I reckon they could just walk :p

It's all good as long as the tax payer doesn't end up funding their player salaries, hopefully that is as unthinkable as it sounds but not sure what 'special arrangements' means

I would have thought this becomes govt owned asset so they’ll be bound by all sorts of red tape that ensures that public funds are protected. Imagine they flog it to the first billionaire that turns up and then another guy pops up and says ‘I would have bought it for twice the price - that’s another entire hospital you could have built’

Yeah tbf this government is always transparent and certainly doesn't have a history of giving away colossal amounts of public money to their mates by fast-tracking Tory donors via VIP lanes in favour of putting them out to tender.

(I really hope you're right)

I think they should place Mark Francois as director.

20 years ago, we were all envisaging the day Roman walked away taking his billions and leaving Chelsea up Shit Creek. It’s taken much longer than we’d thought, and it turns out he had to be pushed, but that day has finally arrived. I really hope this is the start of a slide back into lower mediocrity for them.

I wonder do the players and manager feel any sense of shame now it’s clearly exposed what their owner stands for and how they are able to make so much money from Chelsea/Russia.
