There’s Davies demonstrating the whole Davies v Lenglet thing right there, the Frenchmen would never have given the ball away so carelessly, but nor would he have made that block
Davies played a major part in the (vital) opening goal. He burst into the box, allowing Perisic to pick his cross.

I do really like the look of Lenglet and think he will be the better option generally but credit to Ben for making things happen - not many of his team-mates made runs like that all night.

Tonights crap...Harry cant take free kicks-Son cant take corners- Romero has lost the desire to get stuck in-Lloris cant catch a ball. Apart from that a very good win. On and up and all that.

wtf is this sub change? Conte must see football like Neo see's the Matrix because I'm obviously not at the required level to understand that
Still can’t get my head around the 2 defensive subs when we desperately required a goal. Coupled with the fact that we actually scored twice after they came on…. Neo and Matrix certainly comes to mind!

I think most of the issues that cause these lethargic starts is all a mental thing. Something we've struggled with for a long time.

I love our fans but I don't recall watching many other teams at home, even when they're playing poorly get so many moans and groans from the home supporters.

Don't get me wrong I understand it to an extent, but we seem really bad for it, every misplaced pass, over hit through ball, poor touch, wrong decision made gets huge groans and grunts, I know the players have to step up equally and get the crowd going but it can't help being on that pitch in an already high pressure game then having to triple guess what you do because you know the moans and groans will follow a bad pass. It's just breeding negativity everywhere and causing more problems on the pitch.

Even a few boo's a half time, I get it, we weren't great, but we didn't go into half time 1 or 2-0 down, it was still 0-0, the boo's were so unnecessary.

The atmosphere was actually great first half but they just bashed us into submission. When the team are playing like that it’s impossible and human nature just to stop when the players just aren’t giving anything back. I’m usually the first to moan about our atmosphere around me in the stadium but tonight the crowd couldn’t be blamed. 55 quid and the team perform like that in the first half. It’s very hard when you’re getting behind them and they’re giving nothing back. It’s just not good enough in a champions league game to perform like that at home. We were too passive and let them off. A complete wrong approach to the game.

I dont think its lethargy. I think that is actually how we are set up to play. I was at the game tonight on way back first time in a while, and that was a tough watch. Im not talking about entertainment im talking about the performance, we werent playing at all well until they got their sending off. It was all very predictable, get the ball - through the line to Kane/Richarlison/Son then quick one touch lay offs. It was such a frustrating match but such a relief to get the goal and the second - good start to the CL in terms of result but we will be facing tougher games (given we will most likely play against 11 for starters)

Marseille fans are ****s by the way but think we knew that anyways.

Just got in from work and went through the thread from about p56. Quite a read. Much more entertaining for me than it was at the time, I’m sure.

Not much to say since obviously I couldn’t watch the game, but did notice a few posts saying we were lucky they got a red card etc. Can we nip that narrative in the bud? They got a red card because we sent our forward clean through and their guy chopped him down. We earned that red card. It didn’t magically appear.

Aside from his run that caused the red card (admittedly a game changing moment), Son was again really poor in general play. Fudged at least three great counter attacks by taking way too many touches and not releasing the ball quick enough. It’s been happening a lot recently.

Kulu and Richarlison are breathing heavily down his neck. Both seem to be making things happen far more consistently.

Im sure he’ll start versus City but after that it becomes a toss up between the three of them.

Won again without playing particularly well.
We were quite ponderous and seemed incapable of making 4 consecutive passes.
First half there were too many flicks and tricks rather than playing to feet or into space and it constantly broke down.
Lots of average (at best) individual performances and we may well have struggled were it not for the red card.
Son again was poor and seems to be really struggling when he’s got time to think.
Kulusevski made things happen and credit to Ben Davies who made a great run creating space for Perisic to cross for the vital opener.
We were bang average but won. That hasn’t often been the way for Spurs. Ever. I’ll take that right now.

Davies for Lenglet actually worked perfectly. Ben does make quite a few runs into the box from his LCB role and that helped lead to the opener. Lenglet doesn’t (yet) do that.

I think Tanganga was brought on as hybrid RCB/RB as we didn’t have a RWB on the pitch. Romero wasn’t having a particularly great night (he wasn’t alone) so it sort of made sense.

Passive is how we play. I am fed up with it to be honest. We won but a typically poor watch.

For the longest time watching Spurs I'd see us play well but lose. We now have the opposite - better players? Better manager? Luck?

Dunno but going to enjoy it while I can.

When Lloris punched that ball I thought the entire stadium was going to burst into flames. When players are nervy, and the fans react to a shaky moment, it just becomes a negative feedback loop. It would be great if the fans projected to the players the sort of composure and resilience that they'd like to see on the pitch.
Hope they never log onto SC for a confidence boost then :ROFLMAO:

You're right.

I think we planned to let them come out a bit and play through it as we often do.

The issue was we simply weren't sharp enough and Marseille were quick to shut down avenues and prevented players from turning.

It then looks like we are a little directionless.

I think we need to find ways to stretch the pitch as most of our play goes inside or to the 2 wide players as they drop inside.

Which probably shows why Kuksevski came on at RWB, allowed us to stretch their defence and meant the balls were now going all across the frontline.

Need to work on it.
