im black and dont find it racist at all i would sing along with it people need to stop being so touchcy over rasicsm who knows his dad might really wash elephants

Good on you. You are not offended and you do not see nothing wrong with it fair enough. In that case sing to you hearts content.

The difference between you and others is that although like you it might not affect them and they might not see anything wrong with it, if it offend others, they might desist from singing it, which goes along way in demonstrating that there are decent supporters out there.

Lets hope for your sake that one day the circumstances arent reversed where you are in a situation where you have to depend on people's good nature .............and its not there.

Isn't it funny that the people who seem to be most offended by this silly chant are Caucasian? Hmmm

At least two black people have stated in this thread that they don't find it offensive and there were black fellas in the crowd at Derby singing it loud and proud Hmmm:think:

Furthermore, I asked two of my mates who are of African descent what they thought and they both found it a tad amusing...and ones a dirty gooner! Hmmm:think:

Maybe just maybe some people are being just a touch over sensitive?

I will take a wild stab in the dark and guess your age to be...................12?

Doesnt anyone care that children are present at games and are heavily influenced by what goes on around them. They hear these songs and go around singing them out of the football environment. To be honest I wish I never supported any team, and felt so passionately but its too late now. I guess its an indictment of ones life, where I loves something that doesnt even know who I am.

Me neither, I do worry that we care too much about what kids might hear at football matches, children don't go to games in a vacuum they know what's right and whats wrong before they go to football, anyway it's all very tame compared to when I was a kid.
It's comendable that so many of us consider other peoples feelings so much but I think we need to chill a little bit.

That said, I don't sing the Adebayor song because it's a shit song and I can't see any point in it.

I was in Prague and this song was sung for virtually the whole game, even by many black fans. But I have three problems with it:

1) It is clearly racist. The black guy I was with was of Jamaican parentage and was singing it. It is not really racist to a Jamaican, but certainly is to an African. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

2) It's really not nice to sing that Adebayor's mother is a whore. That, to be honest, is probably racist too. So all African women are whores now are they... OK, even if it isn't racist, it is highly offensive and just not necessary.

3) We should be singing songs to support our team, not slagging off our rivals who we are not even playing.

Prague was my first away trip and I had a great time, but I will never really fit in with the terrace crowd singing these kind of songs, even though I consider myself to be a big Tottenham fan. I just think they are unpleasant.

I am of Jamaican ancestry, and by extension African ancestry, and the song is not racist. It is offensive and nasty, but not racist.

I really don't know what the fuss is about. The guy gets 50 grand a week and most of us earn peanuts, do you reckon he is losing sleep over it?

I don't.

It makes us look a bit petty and stupid that we are in Prague singing about a Togolese player that plays for the Scum.

Other than that,

Oh yes, lets not forget!, It's only racist if verbal insults are thrown at black people, NOT the other way around.

Makes me sick!.

:) You were going so well.......

Anyway, i've worked it out. It's just a new song and a tune the Spurs supporters haven't had a popular song for before now. The Adebayor song will soon cease and that tune will be used for another song. Every new tune (tune, not song) gets lots of airing whether it's funny or not. I'm sure the tune will be used to good effect in a pro Spurs player type way in the coming weeks.

I'll fucking make sure of it.

Is not the song based on his race? I am getting confused now:-|

Personally, I would much prefer to sing positive songs about our own players than sing about those arseholes down the road (unless we're playing them of course)! Its scandalous that some of our own players eg JJ don't even have a song!! Eek

First of all you don't who is white and who is black unless the poster comes forward and says so. Even then you're just trusting that they are, who they say are.

Second just because some black people are not offended it doesn't means that others aren't or that it isn't racist.

I've pretty much stayed away from this thread since a drunken post on Sunday morning, but I would like to ask a perfectly straight, non-flippant question. If it comes across as flippant, it's not meant to.

How many people does it take to find something racist? How many people need to be offended before something is considered offensive? Is it just one?

Seriously, my tongue is firmly away from my cheek, I'm just interested to know thresholds. :)

Coming in late on this debate, as have just got back from Marrakech, in Africa where I did not see a single elephant, let alone person of any race, colour or religion washing elephants.

Funnily enough I did see statues of elephants though and they did look quite clean.

Anyway, I digress.

I have sung the chant, after we beat the scum, thought it was funny initially but it is near the knuckle so can fully understand both sides of the argument.

Heard it on the telly box on Thursday night, didn't think it was the time and the place for an anti Ar5ena1 song.

Do I personally think its racist. No. Is it any more or less racist than a thai prostitute referring to a black man as a chocolate man, simply because we hate him rather than be willing to suck his cock for 20 baht. No.

Is it in bad taste, absolutely yes. Do I care about that. No.

It takes only one person to be offended to throw a comment/word/chant or what ever into question. I remember one situation when a guy I knew called a scottish guy a jock he was mightly offended so he didn't call him a jock again. Other scottish guys I know have no problem being called a jock.

Personally my threshold is one, if someone has explained to me why they have found something that I have said offensive then thats enough for me to at least take it under serious consideration not to say it again.

seriously..why would we want to even take the risk of being branded racists?. All it takes is 1 complaint(from a bitter scum fan) and the media will latch on to it and drag us through the mud. fucking use your brains and stop singing the damn song.

20 baht? That's about 35p... it's amazing the difference in the cost of living out there, huh  I could afford 6 noshings with just the couple of notes i've got pinned to my desk as a momento of my journey - if only i'd spent more wisely

I was actually called vanilla man, but my mates were frequently called chocolate man. Did my mates find it racist, not at all, we were too interested in getting our jollies.

Try saying that over here and see the reaction too.

People saying they find the chant offensive, I guess that's the point isn't it? People saying they find the chant racist, well ain't for me to judge

So your friends are ok about being called chocolate man in this country by all and sundry?

Not at all, quite the contrary in fact.

And yet the words would be exactly the same, just spoken by different people and the reaction would be completely different.

As someone else has said, if people interpret the chant as racist, then at least in some small way it must be, but there are more than one way to interpret something.
