Sorry to sound harsh myself, but this is a really pathetic thread.

Defoe was a well loved player and didn't have much choice in leaving Spurs for Portsmouth. He was getting further behind in the England team and needed to play regular football to secure his international dreams.

For a modern day player to want to actually play to better himself or take the money, I'm glad for Defoe and wish him well.

One thing I will never do, is laugh at other players/teams expenses as then I will sound like many of the idiots you get on the Arsenal/Chelsea forums who slate us for not winning anything.

Bad thread.

Feck me, I actually agree with summat 'Pony' has written

Don't approve of the thread. JD will always have a special place in my heart and he absolutely was gutted to leave the Lane.

He could of signed a new contract couldnt he ?? Dont you remember the club statement ?? It is with regret we announce the transfer of Jermain Defoe to Portsmouth, there was only 18 months left on his contract so we had to sell him as he would not sign a new contract.

As nice as we like to think he was, as a footballer he is a businessman. He would of shafted us, like Campbell. The club werent taking any chances & wasnt his agent Sky Andrew too ???

I understand what you are saying but I say you are wrong in my opinion for the following reasons.

He did not want to sign a contract for the reason what Stoof said, he wanted first team football, yes in our eyes that may be unreasonable, but to himself, Defoe saw himself as one of the first choices.

Secondly, if what you said , that he wanted to run down his contract and leave like Campbell, why didnt he? Whatever other clubs offered for his services, if he wanted to stay and see out his contract, the club couldnt sell him.

The club is going to look after itself from a PR point of view so a cleverly worded statement is going to let them of the hook.

The club also has to take responsibility for the whole Sol Campbell thing, as they didn't want to sell him, and although tried getting him to sign a contract, he could have been sold, but the board also let him run his contract down.

Something the club has learned from by the looks of it.

I was sad to see him go but things must have been bad for him to be prepared miss out one cup final (possibly two).

If he had waited till the end of May and got his money's worth I could of understood it.

It's so weird seeing him in a Pompey shirt.

Best of luck JD the door is always open

Bit harsh, he had to go as he was never gonna be playing. He was well loved and I do believe he did love it here.

He's still a Yido, well until he scores against us :)

JD has got what he wanted, regular first team football and a manager that likes and respects him, we should show him some respect too, he was a major part of our success over the last few years!
I hope he does fantastically well at Portsmouth, but never against us!

If this thread had been for dumpy, moany faced, overrated Irish fullback Stephen Carr it'd be more valid.

JD left because he wanted to play and you can't blame him - Carr left for 'medals'......remind me when Newcastle last won any.....

He probably wouldn't have played on Sunday anyway
Good luck to him though!

He probably knows he'll win nothing at Portsmouth, but he wants first team football. Good on him, I say.

I'd rather we show some respect for Defoe for his sterling service while with us.

You wont win nothing at Portsmouth.

You should have said:

You will not win anything at Portsmouth.

Or

You will win nothing at Portsmouth.
