I love Jermain too, i can understand him wanting to play - but the decision to join Portsmouth means a medal-less career.

If this thread had been for dumpy, moany faced, overrated Irish fullback Stephen Carr it'd be more valid.

JD left because he wanted to play and you can't blame him - Carr left for 'medals'......remind me when Newcastle last won any.....

Well, good. If the lad wants to play first and foremost, and not coast along on the bench and pick up a medal or two, then i applaud him. Good luck, Jermain.

Well yeah, I'd have to agree with that. Had he known that we'd win the Cup, he'd have probably stayed until the Summer, but I'm sure he's still happier to be playing and doesn't regret it for that reason.

Sorry to sound harsh myself, but this is a really pathetic thread.

Defoe was a well loved player and didn't have much choice in leaving Spurs for Portsmouth. He was getting further behind in the England team and needed to play regular football to secure his international dreams.

For a modern day player to want to actually play to better himself or take the money, I'm glad for Defoe and wish him well.

One thing I will never do, is laugh at other players/teams expenses as then I will sound like many of the idiots you get on the Arsenal/Chelsea forums who slate us for not winning anything.

Bad thread.

He'll get 90 minutes a lot more at Portsmouth than at our gaff.

He was always my 4th choice - and I could never understand why people preferred him to Keano. But I wish him no ill. If you saw his face when he was a Portsmouth for the first time, he looked gutted. He didn't want to go, but he could hardly sign a contract extension and unfortunately he had a choice to make.

It seems that he may have come within a few weeks of missing out on a trophy and medal but that's life and eventually I expect he'll be a happier bunny and scoring for fun.

Cheers for the goals, ShiftAndShoot - I've always liked Pompey too, I roomed with a Pompey fan at Uni and their fans are generally pretty awesome [fucking bells] so I will support his tenure there!

Maybe I should go on Pompey Community and sign up as Defoei and sing just his praises.

He could of signed a new contract couldnt he ?? Dont you remember the club statement ?? It is with regret we announce the transfer of Jermain Defoe to Portsmouth, there was only 18 months left on his contract so we had to sell him as he would not sign a new contract.

As nice as we like to think he was, as a footballer he is a businessman. He would of shafted us, like Campbell. The club werent taking any chances & wasnt his agent Sky Andrew too ???
