Harsh reality - but if Lenglet were the back-up LCB - it would be an improvement over anyone we have on the roster right now - particularly on the left side.
There's no reason why we can't sell PEH, Reguilon, Rodon, Japh, Sanchez this summer and buy VDV and Tapsoba. As said before Dier and Davies will be much more difficult to shift. I'd only consider bringing Lenglet in if it was A) on loan and B) If most of the deadwood CBs are refusing to leave.

Apparently Ange always does this. Also good to hear him say he likes to be across everything going on at the club. Sounds like he'll be a manager in the Fergie sense rather than just a head coach
It must be refreshing to know the manager has their backs, rather than throw them under the bus to save his own skin!!!

Encouraging. If it wasn't clear before (which it was), we should:
- Buy VDV
- Buy Tabsoba

Do whatever we need on outgoings to balance the books

If we can sort the defence, the rest will fall into place. I'm confident of that.

We are going to need more than a slight improvement. Ange keeps saying regarding the step up to the Prem that there is no difference as it's all relative. Well I see his point but the difference with the Prem is you'll get punished on the counter far more because of the quality of the opposition in the counter attack and the finishing. CB is and always has been the most important need for us for this to work and until we get that addressed we are going to see Ossie type score lines that we are not on the winning side of.

Sort your shit out Levy and sign the deal we had agreed for VdV and stop trying to make every deal like a Kays catalogue purchase from the 70's/80's.
I know you know this but for the avoidance of doubt, I was using understatement for sarcastic effect.

The point remains, we get in a couple of good CBs and we'll have a real chance of doing far better than many hoped even a month ago. And even if not spectacular, the football seems certain to be more enjoyable to watch and an improvement on last season's finish is within easy reach.

If we only sign 1 of them and Lenglet, its utterly unacceptable.
Totally agree with you on this. Got to get two in. I understand the argument of we need to sell and there’s no reason why this cannot be done. The money in the kitty from selling the following:

Nbombele
Lo Celso
Sanchez
Tanganga
Reggie

That’s 5 that could get sorted, perhaps add a few more to that list.

I hope behind the scenes they are getting the two CBs sorted (not Lenglet please not him)

I think it's the type of game we may see a lot this season...lot of possession, lot's of chances created but ultimately defence letting us down.

We need to get the defenders we need in ASAP so Ange can start working with them. Hard for him to put the structure in place now when you know personnel will change. We need to be quicker here in getting the players we need. It is absoltuely critical, it should be priority number one.
I think defensive structure will improve a lot and we will bring in better quality too. We restricted West Ham to 4 chances (although I think they are nailed on for relegation at the moment) based purely on improving our ball retention and winning the ball high up. We just can’t learn it all in a week. I honestly wasn’t expecting us to be as far along in the transition to the new style as we were but clearly still learning to be done when we lose the ball.

Reguilon and Tanganga are done for me.

A top class imposing fast centre back is absolutely essential. I'd even say a left back/centre back to play a man city style back 4, regardless of how well Udogie looked, is another.

Still lack that controller in midfield too.

I'd say the first two goals were less about the defense letting us down in general, and more about not defending set pieces specifically.

We have to remember, Ange is starting from scratch when it comes to setting up the team. Set piece defense, while important, will be one of the last areas Ange gets to.

I don’t think we can draw too many conclusions about individuals based off that performance. There were some really positive performances and some not so positive ones. But it’s the first game so I’m not going to get overly worried or excited about who played badly and who played well.

What is really positive though is the style of play and system. This looks like it’s going to be fantastic to watch us this season. We’ll likely take a couple of beatings here and there, but we’ll smash a lot of teams once we get going.

Yeah seems to be quite a common theme when a new manager comes into a team and completely revamps the style but doesn't quite have the right personnel.

Seem to recall Klopp especially had big issues with Liverpool's defence when he arrived in the PL and they were shipping a ton of goals until the players got to know the system better and they improved the squad (VVD being absolutely key).

This style of play is so fun to watch but all it takes is one CB switching off and a cute pass between the lines for a barrel of turds like West Ham to score a cheap goal out of nothing.

It's absolutely vital we're decent at CB.

If Levy doesn't strengthen us at CB it's going to absolutely break me. As a Spurs fan i'm sick of having carrots of hope dangled in front of me only to then be taken away!

There’s a chance that could be our centreback partnership next season if they both cam in. I’m not convinced Romero is that arsed any more. I didn’t see the whole game but it’s glaringly obvious where the major problem of the team is.

I sort of agree. But, in reality, Ange will be drawing conclusions very soon. I figure there are several players who have about a week left to make an impression, or be pushed to the side.

Ange, has the advantage of watching training also, but he will be casting a critical eye over match performances too.
