On this Ben White business, I remember reading in Paul Walsh's autobiography that he declined an England U21 call up under Bobby Robson.
He was 21, with 5 full international Caps under his belt, and just signed for Liverpool and was told to go on their end of season tour.
Robson went public and told him he'd never play for England again.
"If he can't motivate himself to play in a European Under-21 final, he's not for me."
Personally I thought that was too harsh, but now Southgate is being far too soft.
You can't set the precedent that players can pick and choose when they'll accept a call up.
It's disrespectful to the other England players making that commitment, as well as the fans.
He should be excluded for several years.
Technically he's in breach of FIFA rules and should be banned from club football too.

He should also be accountable and tell everyone the real reason. I suspect the reason he’s not is because it’s a selfish, egotistical reason and he knows everyone would think he’s even more of a twat.
He didn’t even have the decency to call Southgate, he got Edu to call McDermott.

Agree on Rashford, not sure who to play on the left. I went with the other choices as its just Man City style with Stones falling back in beside Maguire to make a back 4 when needed.

tbf, Henderson captained Liverpool for... I dunno, must've been a few years, and it sounds like he's "popular in the locker room" - I mean, that's a broad statement, it could be he's a motivator that the younger players listen to, could be that he gives a great foot rub, I have no idea, but while fans roll their eyes - me included - I've never heard other players say anything negative about him..
It's just frustrating that there are top level midfielders waiting for a chance for England and he takes up a slot. Fully, 100% expect him to take up a coaching role either with England or follows Southgate to whatever club he ends up at.

Fully aware I'm not English saying this but I've no real issue with what Ben White has done. It appears he isn't that keen on being away from family / home setting and potentially doesn't look like he enjoys football and it's more of a job type thing for him. If that's the case then why take on the additional travelling, pressure etc that comes with national team especially if he suspects he could be an unused sub at the euros this summer like he was at the last one.

That came out ages ago - he said that he doesn't watch football after training etc and it is pretty much a job.

I know nothing about Ajax's current situation but he captained them last night. So he must be doing something right to be seen in pro circles as a locker room leader by managers and players, something us mere outsiders don't get an insight in to. I'd expect this to be his last tournament and if it is, I have no problem with him being in and around the squad. Now if he is included in squads after the summer then I have a problem with it.

I suspect there are more players now who see it that way than care to admit. When there's a camera in their face, they enjoy that bit, the celebrity part of being a footballer, but on the pitch - imagine growing up, from the age of 4 or 6 or whatever, you're noticed as being a bit better than the others you're playing against, so you get scouted, sign with a club as a junior as you get into double figures, then you spend the next ten years training every single day, your weekends taken up by traveling to and from games, you only hang out with the squad and at any point, your mate could be moved on, you could be moved on, and have to relocate somewhere else with the whole family.
You get no teenage rebellion years, you get no opportunity to have an angsty goth phase, go out and have a wild night with your mates that won't result in you ruining your entire career if you make a few bad decisions. Football becomes life and while it seems great for the paycheck, the actual day to day growing up must drag horribly.

Because it pretty much is until they retire and I admired Assou-Ekotto's honesty when he came out and said it all those years ago. If you're there for the money, cool. I respect it if they're up front about it.

While I crapped on the squad generally, I'm glad Gordon & Branthwaite have been noticed and I really hope that Southgate gives them both a fair chance. They haven't got in on reputation, they've both earned that and I'm pleased for them.
