As far as I know, the Nations League was a way to replace meaningless friendlies with a made up tournament, then they kept the meaningless friendlies.
There are far fewer meaningless friendlies than there used to be before the Nations League.

And, if you really think about it, all tournaments are made up :p

These March games before major summer tournaments are a bit of an outlier because they are needed to qualify the final few teams like Wales who are playing two for them incredibly important fixtures, but for those who are already qualified or out they are just holes in the calendar that have to be filled.

And they do actually have to be filled for FIFA rankings and contractual obligations reasons. You can't just decide to skip them, and why would any international manager decide against playing fixtures to get the squad together and start tournament preparations anyway?

The international break I want to see canned is the September one. Rejig the calendar and give club football a bit longer after the season starts before the international squads get their time. Three or four league games before a break is too few.

Thanks.

I think if the England flag had been done in a similar way, with it maintaining the red cross as the Scottish has with the white cross, then I think most people would have been happy with it.
It's not a white cross... It's the same colour of the shirt which is a light blue.

I don't think the yellow has so much been changed to blue as they've just taken one section of the flag (the green diamond) and put it over the colour of the kit. I think there's something about not retaining any of the normal colours of the St Georges Cross that has caused the problems.

As I said in my reply to @luRRka, If they'd kept the red cross then I think they could have put it on any colour background without issue.

I guess it's all a bit subjective really isn't it? Someone else may describe what they've done to the flag differently to how you have, and some I'm sure may also still find reason to complain about a red cross with just any colour background. I think it's a stylistic decision that's been thought by others to imply many different things, I just really don't see it that way though. If you do then you're of course free to have that view!

Nike will be loving this publicity
Not sure about that. Nike don’t need publicity - we’ve all heard of Nike and know what they do. What they need is people buying the shirt and I don’t think this widespread derision of both the design and the cost is helping on that front.

Wooooooof I’ve just seen how much they are priced as well!

125 quid for a football shirt??

Any fans who buy them are mugs, you gotta take a stand with these companies at some point as they’re just taking the piss (especially when they then can’t get basics like the flag right! :playful:).

Fair enough! I'm just of the opinion that national flags are generally not something that's fair game for a 'playful' overhaul in a sporting context, especially where there has been zero consultation with fans groups. I am a bit of a traditionalist in that regard, and I am firmly not in the camp that believes this is some kind of 'woke makeover', it seems done more for shirt sales. Makes it feel like our footballers are mannequins for Nike's designers.

Yeah if you want the elite "match" shirt and fuck that. The replica is at least £65 for kids, which I know is at least twice the price it should be but anyone who buys the elite kit is a sucker who deserves to be fleeced anyway

Really? can't see it anywhere on:
  • WC 2022 home - LINK
  • WC 2022 away - LINK
  • Euro 2020 home - LINK
  • Euro 2020 away - LINK
  • Womens 2023 home - LINK
  • Womens 2023 away - LINK
Yeah just had a quick look at both of the last England kits I bought (England womens away Euro 2022 kit and the World Cup away 2023 kit) and can't see it on either of them.

This is not even the first time different stuff has been done with the flag on an England shirt. Here’s the collar of the 201O World Cup shirt
Thank you. I knew we had the cross different on old shirts but couldn't find any. there was no outrage back then as I recall.

Yeah I do understand what you're saying. I think I just see it as such a small 'gesture' in this particular instance. I saw it when the kit leaked and thought absolutely nothing of it, and didn't envisage this response. I know the two things represent differently, but in terms of intention (whether misguided or not) I see it as the same as like when Nike make our club crest iridescent, for example. I think it also just irks me a bit as many seem up in arms so much more over this than matters that are much more concerning.

I don't think it's that big of a deal, but the funny thing is it's probably not just a random decision to change the flag color.

It's the kind of thing decided by millions spent on marketing and consulting and they royally fucked it up lol.

It's "woke" in the sense of being motivated by catering to "demographics". These fucking companies need to remember a few cliche maxims:
If it ain't broke don't fix it
Don't try to reinvent the wheel
Keep it stupid simple

Do that and you'll create a perfectly good, non-controversial England kit every year. Apple don't completely change the iphone every year, and people still buy it.

I think they’re ok with it… ok, so I’m being facetious. But as has already been covered, the England flag has been changed previously, if it is even included. Nike don’t do many kits with flags at all and there are other nations with altered flags on their kits (Scotland as an example). It seems like national badges are more sacrosanct and kit manufacturers/national FAs are a little bit more playful with flags and this has been jumped on as some sort of weird ‘culture war’ when there are far more important issues with football…
