By the way, ask any Villa fan and they will tell you he has not been by far the best player in their team, Petrov has been far better this season.

Extremelly overrated player and I was a bit disappointed he ended up at Man City and not Liverpool, would have much rather seen them scouse ****s overspend on a very overrated player.

Well fingers crossed that still happens when they sign Downing!

Wow.

The question that really needs answering, can Barry possibly be twice as good as Lucas Neill?

He has consistently been the best player, in a team that finished above us in the league.

Actually it turns out, as Villa found to their cost after he was injured, that Martin Laursen was their best player.

Veering off Spurschat this one!

Incredible money, how long before a salary cap is introduced? I dont want it to but if wages keep going up at this rate it will be needed.

If Platini gets his way clubs with huge debts won't be able to compete in the Champs league, and you can bet for the life of you that this money the city owners are throwing around comes out as an interest free loan from them to the club like Abramovich's money does.... So as they aren't working as a stable financial club, it could cost them the thing they are throwing money at to try to get

i'll say it again the only way to realistically break into the big 4 ATM is via a billionaire benefactor

City are going to have a go - there are no guarantees -

Gonna be a fascinating summer

we may have to wait very late as Harry intimated to get our targets

cos while the likes of Blackburn & RSC think they might have have a sniff of City's money etc etc - i use RSC as an example - i haven't a clue if City are interested

but what's for sure if any player we are interested in, thinks they've a chance of City's riches, I doubt they'll be rushing to sign for us

I'm sure Barry will continue to be criticised for this, but the fact is that one needs a super rich investor to come along now if there's to be a chance of cracking the top four.....or at least signing the top players. I'm not saying Citeh are going to do well over night but I do think it is likely that they will break into the top foor sooner than the rest of us if they are able to suck in players with such astronomical sums of money.

*sigh* I wish we had a mega rich Arab lined up.

The fact that any club would offer any player that much just goes to show what a joke Premier League football has become.

Earning that in a year would make you pretty well off, but earning that every week for kicking a football around a field, especially for someone who isn't even the best in the business (or even that close IMO) is an insult to the rest of us who pay towards those wages in match tickets and subscription fees.

good points Azrael and sendo :)

the prem is a joke and to a large extent the joke is on us

but what can we do as fans - give up?

petition our club to drop out of the division into the sanity of the championship?

I know not

basically for years my answer was with Azrael , we need a billionaire benefactor, and that's still my view on one level

however I think the new stadium is very much a project that Levy wants to see through

so I'm now resigned to hoping for the new stadium, plus about 5 years for us to have a crack at the big 4/5, whatever it is by then

Of course we don't give up, but I do feel that the financial destabilisation in the league means that if you aren't in the top four and don't have a billionaire behind you then sooner or later you are destined to become a nothing team that either sits in the lower half of the Prem table, or worse still, bounces up and down from the Champsionship.

Having a billionaire owner/backer will not guarantee anything, at the moment the top four, (Liv, Man U, Chels, Arse) are the clubs that all footballers want to play for.
When the likes of Citeh are bought by a Billionaire, it means that the top four are not going to get as many of the top footballers as they would have, it means distribution is spread over further.
If another 6/7 clubs are bought out by billionaires then the advantage is gone and, eventually, all prem clubs will have billionaire owners.....wages will be £1m per week for top footballers, and then £2m...£3m... £4m....until we have Gazillionaire owners. And the wheel starts again, but by then the prem will consist of 10/12 clubs.
the criteria for acceptance into the Prem will be that the club MUST have owners who are "X" amount rich!
Footballers claiming they want to join a club because they want/need to play CL or European football will be a thing of the past...it will be 100% for the money.......OOH, hold on.....
